Considering a speed triple. Opinions?
Did anyone go from jap sport bikes to a speed triple? I'm seriously considering one as I always loved the way they look. Did any of you guys regret switching?? What should I watch out for? How reliable are they?? I'm looking to purchase the 05-10 models since I think they look the best. It will be for mostly city and highway riding with some canyons and a few track days in between. Will the speed be too big and heavy to have actual fun?? Should I consider the street triple instead?? Any suggestions or input is welcome. Thanks

I opted for the Street Triple R (675cc) since I gave up street bikes after having a kid and knowing I was riding too fast/crazy. The 675 is quick and fun, but not so wheelie prone as my former liter bikes. It's super light (~400 lbs. wet), which gives it a similar power/weight rating, and is a more modern design. Never did ride a Speed Triple, but my experience is that what I heard about triples is try - they provide a nice blend of the best aspects of twins and I4's. I still miss the rumble of a good uncorked twin sport bike, though!
Mine is new as of April, so no trouble so far. As a former sport bike owner, I now greatly prefer naked bike ergos for street riding - they're tons of fun while still being comfy and practical.

Between the speed and street triples, I'd lean towards towards the street...but it really depends on what you want from the bike. The street triple and 675 are the motor/chassis to get in the middleweight category, while they don't provide the thrust of the larger displacement bikes they're definitely far more rewarding to ride IMO. From what I've seen, reliability is good but not perfect (that's only going back a few years though). Not sure if you're planning on doing maintenance yourself, if you're not, get a good feel for your local dealers before you pull the trigger.

I had a 2007 Speed Triple. It was a fun bike that caught many looks. As much as I loved the motor, the handling was marginal and I had quite a few reliability issues. If you can find one for a good price, go for it.
