My experience is that the start stop feature adds about 1-2 mpg, and it's an aquired taste, like the rev match, you either like it or turn it off.
The best part about the stop/start is that while sitting at a light or in traffic you are not using any more gas than the Prius next to you..

But one thing that is cool is it will shut off below 3mph... meaning you can be gently rolling with the engine off as long as you don't use steering/brakes a lot. On my way home there's a gentle downhill onramp that typically moves at walking pace - I see if I can make it the whole ramp without the engine turning on haha. In the process, maybe I improve my mpg from like... 15.2mpg to 15.3mpg :P

Co worker has a 2015 M3. By 30k they replaced the motor and tranny. I'd never buy one. I'd lease. It's well known BMW doesnt make reliable cars. He's looking to dump it. It's been a horrible purchase for him.

you can find a story like that about almost every single sports car out there.

not really. I've heard of gt3's, vettes, stangs, egos, wrx/sti, etc all having an engine or tranny issue. some are rare, but shit still happens. You can find Manufacturer buybacks on almost every car in the market. Sometimes it's a powertrain issue, sometime it's an electric issue; etc.
You can tell us an anecdoctal story about your friend's m3 losing a motor at 30k, and I can tell you another anecdotal story about a friend whose driven his m3 50k miles alrdy with not a single issue. Doesn't make either of our stories representative of the reliability of the car.

How about this for a sports car story...a 2001 Miata LS I owned since new for almost three years: 1. they offered to buy back the car since the hp was sold as 155 when it was really 140. 2. gas tank and filler hose went bad, replaced, warranty was good. 3. I had three clutches in 28000 miles, defective materials...constantly got clutch shudder, warranty was good. 4. #4 bearing went bad, lots of engine slop....warranty got me a new motor complete. 5. after engine change car stopped in mid traffic....fan belt came off and there was not enough juice in battery, it slipped enough not to throw a check engine light. 5.three sets of brakes, pad material transferred to rotors, warranty was good. Then i got two broken windshields, hit twice, not my fault.
After all that it was time to get my S2000. Now that's a true sports car lemon story...

BMW has sorted the stop start with a manual very well...in my 2013 car it was good and it works well even when it should be confused like if you accidently dump the clutch when stopped and giving it no gas, it restarts...the electronics in general in my 2016 are even better, voice recognition, buttons, everything works perfectly, no rev hang, etc....better than the 2013 335i i had. I also had a volvo that was a real lemon and a couple of crap mustangs ....you can get a lemon with any car and people treat their cars differently, as we see here with S2000, I have a 2004 car since new with very few things that have gone wrong with it, some folks have many issues, it can come down to owner error and abuse, SOMETIMES....
