This thread highlights how digital gauges don't age well...and yes, I think the S2000's looked dated as well. Decent layout, but the color is all wrong. An LCD display would have been much nicer.

I'm not a big fan of the S2k's digital dash either, but whenever I'm bummed out by its blandness and lack of analog gauges (which I love) I just remind myself that it is "Formula 1 inspired" or whatever Honda marketing calls it, so it has to be cool, right?

Actually, according to Dave McLellan, the '84 Corvette got the digital dash because the engineers considered it a better and more flexible way to display information. They also considered that it could be more compact though the Corvette's display wasn't. However, they '84's display did take advantage of the flexibility. The center 4 digital displays could be set to display different readings based on driver preference.
McLellan said that even though the design wasn't a hit with consumers he did feel vindicated that race cars ended up going with digital dashes for basically the same reasons they cited. However, I think the primary reason why race cars went digital is because a lack of space for gauges. Now many racecars that have sufficient space are still digital simply because it's easier for the display makers do make a few smaller models that work in all cases rather than messing with a set of larger traditional displays. Also, in the case of the lower end gauge packages, the digital dashes are actually cheaper than a set of quality analog gauges!

man that 323 gtx setup looks cool even though abit dated.
And to Chris S,
I would have to agree with you about the color that is why I am switching to the blue.
