BMW E90/ E91/ E92/ E93 OEM Genuine Mirror Glass Heating & Dimming 2005-2008 year eBay
Can't work out if a pair or ..... i guess this would be classed as handling stolen goods as they probably came off a UK car stolen and then 'exported' .....

edit: looking at that I can't believe it was just the mirror, no panel damage at all must have only been millimetres

Is the one you have the wrong shape then Rog?

Won't fit. From 2009 there were a bunch of upgrades including these pesky mirrors, start/stop engine etc. This photo shows the new style with a hole. Previously they were a simple L pillar mount - and a different shape, less pointy

I don't think the mirrors changed on the M3. Only on the normal 3 series the lci changed the mirrors which will probably make your search a bit easier.

I would get the part number off the rear of the broken mirror glass and start with googling it - even BMW aren't stupid enough to use a completely custom glass even if they did redesign the housing with those daft horns.

Wilf, UF: well spotted. Looking back my pensioner blue 58 plate M3 tin top (E93) is similar but the housing/horns look slightly thicker? Studying and liberating the back plate is what I am doing now. There is a 6-digit part number etched in the plastic of the back plate so that's something to follow up. Edit: also a BMW logo and 'BME E92 RH aspherical'. No joy on google. They only ever made about 16,000 of these cars. But here is a photo of the after market mirror (no auto dip support) showing the unusual shape with what I call a point end:
In the back plate of the OEM mirror there are 2 leads to one soldered terminal and 2 from another. Both of these are at the outer edge of the mirror opposite from the 4-lead snapped off computer lead, which is at the door side. This is consistent I believe with one circuit for the heating element and one circuit to turn on/off the dimming sandwich of glass-oil-reflective backing. I doubt the backplate is reuseable: I don't think it is possible to effectively repair (re-join) the flat plastic computer lead with my ahem soldering skills. But once I have got all the shattered glass off I can perhaps pry and confirm that I can just use the heating circuit and get my Indy to make a lead. Also I will quiz the stealer's technicians when I collect the over priced unpainted plastic cover shortly.

Wait for a secondhand part. I had that type of door mirror on an M5 smashed once. Was a bit of a wait but one came up (replacement glass) eventually.
Alternatively could you get a mod done by one of those setups that fixes broken pcbs, ecus, etc?

If you can get at a parts diagram, see if you can compare part numbers or better yet ... get hold of an elcheapo 'ornery' M3 mirror that looks like it might be the same and compare it to the backplate / mount plate of yours .... if they are the same ( but different part numbers ) you do at least have some options.
