The Datsun was properly-engineered too.

OK, Japanese tyres and dampers were useless back then, but the chassis had potential.
Yup, Capri had a rather cartwheel like suspension...
Indeed; it was mostly Escort, which was primitive even by 1960s standards.

At least the guys in Cologne assembled their versions as if they actually GAF. Ours didn't.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your responses! Only just come back to this thread! I did warn it would be painfully slow

Daytona Dave - That white one is very nice! That one is a 2+2 which is what I had in another thread on a trailer! It was a bit of a bodge up buying that to be honest as I didn't want a 2+2. I ended up swapping it for a super rusty 240Z which I broke an have kept some parts as spares for my 260Z.

C7 - I can see it being very expensive! I bought it for £2500 as a non runner with a bit of rust on it... I think I'll be looking at 15k or so finished.

Polemicist - I hope I don't feel it should be committed to memory once I've finished it! That would be a little gutting!

I have managed to get some more dismantling done on the car. I've taken off the front subframe and suspension, hubs and arms plus the rear arms and diff mounts along with the R200 diff. Its basically ready for shot blasting now, bar a few little things like the brake pipes and a few brackets. I need to take the doorcards off and access weather or not the doors can be saved from the rot at the bottom or weather I will need to source replacements.

Here are some more photos - the OS wing is just hanging there for storage. I'm running out of parts space!!! Note the breaking S2000 in the background!:

I certainly have my work cut out and I'm praying not tooo much is going to fall off when the car is shot blast....

Yea I saw that! I wanted to do one from scratch rather than buy one. It will feel good knowing I brought it back from death!

Hey guys, Thanks for all the comments!

I got the car back from Hockly Motorsport a few days ago, all blasted and now in bare metal with a thin coat of plastic (from the plastic media used to blast it).

Its not to bad. Or at least there are no nasty surprises apart from those I already knew about. Its still a LOT of work to do and quotes to have it welded elsewhere are around the £5.5k mark!

Anyway, here are some photos:

The only thing that concerns me is the creasing in the floor pan around where the rear arches and transmission tunnel meet that can be seen in this photo. Can someone confirm to me that their Z was the same when in bare metal?

Im sure there has been no serious damage to the shell and there are no signs of a repair, but its odd that this creasing is there. Is it from the factory?

And finally back at home safe in the garage!

Not that I know much about these things, but is it not just cost effective press work on some thing that is not seen and doesn't need to be especially pleasing to the eye just efficient , but as you say you need to see another to be sure .

There are some hit and miss bits of press work under the S and some pretty shabby assembly with poor spot welds just have a deco under the bonnet for a start. Some Loverly rust traps too one place being the front cross member and the seams and end brackets onto the side rails.

Sorry for the slight O/T hijack. I got excited when I saw this photo

I pulled over in that spot last year!

Whilst out rambling this morning with a few friends, we discovered this rather sad looking 260Z, near the improbably named hamlet of Sparty Lea in deepest Northumberland.

There didn't appear much worth salvaging, aside from the dashboard. I would have taken a closer look but was frightened-off by the stone statues...
