Update

Something is wrong - it appears to return close to 20mpg gently driven

Of more concern is that it needs some work on the rear suspension - at least a couple of bushes - as it has developed an annoying knock

Thing is, it's all a bit Forth Bridge under there and you also have to remove all sorts of stuff to get to the bushes (such as springs)

I don't fancy my chances of being able to do it myself just because it's all so meaty, likely to be tight and that I can only access it lying on my back under the behemoth. I can see myself getting stuck with it half dismantled and undriveable

And I'll be fretting about whether I should have replaced everything while I was in there

So methinks I'll just pay a specialist for a complete rear suspension refresh. It has done 90K and it all looks original under there so the knock is probably a good indicator that other stuff will fail before long

They could do other stuff like corrosion on fuel pipes while they have the suspension out

I also discovered someone had been scraping off underseal at the rear ends of both sills, presumably to check corrosion

Of course, that has allowed some rust to start and get under the bitumen but fortunately I saw it in time and it has now been cleaned, converted, zinced and painted

I'm happy to spend a few thousand on this car - it's magnificent

Specialist says it needs A frame bushes and shock lower bushes

That latter are £25 each but included in new shockers (which also have the top mounts) which cost under £90 each so new shocks might as well go in

When that's done next week it should be good for another 50K miles, which given my anticipated mileage of 3K pa, should take some time

I think both sides should get a lick of paint and that should be it

Your est was a bit north i guess?

Always quite satisfying to get an expert eye on and find its an easyish fix and he knows what it is

Yes, I'm well under my estimate

It turns out there was a bit more rust (of components) than we first thought but she should be all back together today.

Have also asked for fuel and brake lines to be sorted while the rear suspension is out

Both advisories on the last MOT so it makes sense to do them now

Goes in for major paint this month - both sides and bumpers

If he does a good job I might treat my STR to a front end facelift and rear bumper bottom lift

The Daimler is tungsten metallic which might be tricky to match whereas the Jag is solid ebony which should be easy

Fuel damper on the Daimler needs changing - specialist can do that

Prior to the paint the 66 will get a runout to Brands on Sunday (superbikes) and then the only other things to do will be a scratch to the rear seat and some new tyres to replace the Nexens

Will be interesting to see the mpg on a longer run

I didn't calculate the mileage exactly but over about 160 miles I would estimate over 20mpg. I'm more than happy with that.

The car was faultless on the trip and I was interested to see how it would cope with 5 miles of crawling on the M23 as the engine produces huge amounts of heat.

All seemed completely ok. The car needed a run badly so it's now running very sweetly prior to its paintjob.

Apart from some wind and tyre noise, it's close to silent at cruising speeds and it's more than capable of putting most moderns in their place if the mood takes (like when MLM idiots try and prevent motorway overtakes). The reality is that it's best when tooling along at 70mph in lane 1 listening to some opera.

Finding it in the car park wasn't too difficult as at over 5m long it sticks out a bit!

My first trip to a big bike event - really enjoyed it and a very friendly atmosphere.

My God, Brands has some undulations!

Since I'm in update mode today.

MOT due this month. Don't think I've done more than a thousand miles in the last year. I decided to hold off on the paint until I can keep the car in the style it deserves. What that has meant is that on its weekend runs to Goodwood or some other lunch venue I haven't been bothered about it picking up dings.

Had a one bit of excitement. Another throttle sticking open episode. There's a large capstan-like thing in the middle of the engine that links throttles on each side. Lack of use meant this had got a bit sticky. I only found this out afterwards. Had to stand on the brakes and turn it off to stop the bugger - cue much ungentlemanly smoking of brakes It is not easy to pilot with no pas or brake without the servo. Fortunately I had some warning this time and could see the situation developing and that it wasn't at cruising speeds on a busy motorway. Problem sorted with lubrication, like so many...

Still, no harm done, unlike the last time it happened to me in a V12.

Keep or sell to be decided. I want to keep but it could get in the way while my house works are going on. There's a certain appeal in selling everything and restocking.

I've done the capstan thing! Series 3...

It's possible to get the cables to jump out of their grooves, if it's not all properly lubricated/adjusted correctly.
