Winter tyres
#11
I've run winter tyres on the S2000 for a few years ( when it was my DD) and also run them on the Aygo. Continental Winter Contact, they work well and are hilariously slidey when it's a bit warm for them. I still maintain any tyre is ok when it's just cold, it's only when you get snow / ice that winter tyres really come into their own.
All that aside, a higher profile tyre on a smaller rim is no bad thing when it's 'bouncing off kerbs' weather or more often, having to mount a kerb to get away from some other sliding out of control dipstick in yet another urban tank on summer slicks fitted to their 22" cruiser rims. AWD gets their 2.5 tonnes moving but it cannot defy gravity when it comes to stopping the thing on slippy tarmac.

Youtube 'idiots in Land Rovers'. Actually - that ought to be a collective noun...

Farming types in Fagenders and Land Bruisers that look like they've been to Aleppo via Kosovo seem to know what they're doing.
It's the ones in shiny Leased Rovers who are the Auditypical buffoons.

I still chuckle every time i see someone in one of those 'LaraCroft' specials, festooned with lights, snorkel, chequer board and 2 roofracks and not a spot of dirt on the thing.

We have a local group who like to scare the horse's arses and bring most of the byways back into town with them.
But the shiny LR is sort of the local equivalent to the IFA Trabant in Karl Marx Stadt 30 years ago.

I have AD07 all around on the Lotus, oem fit.
Not exactly a cut-slick like a 888, but still very much a track/summer oriented tyre with limited grooves.
Bloody thing still outcorners most things, even in sub-zero.
It's nonsense.
Drive around the car's capability, not work the car around your ability.

A few days in I remain unconvinced.
I detect two differences - better ride than the run flats, but that's supposed to be true regardless of winteryness.
And possibly a little better front grip but then the summers were more worn.
I shall reserve judgement until temps drop markedly. Tbf it has been mild (but wet) the last few days.
I think I agree with Steve in principle.
I will be back in the STR with MPSS next week so we'll see how undriveable that is.

I've gone from MPSS to winters on the M3 and although they feel a bit vague at speed they are a lot more grippy when it's cold, you can feel the rubber is a lot softer.
