I did P90x for my 40th birthday and that is a pullup heavy workout program. You do pullups a couple times a week in two different workouts and you have to do many sets of different types of grip. I had been doing lat pulldowns for a while so I could do sets of 10 right off the bat and you'd have to do eight sets in the most pullup intensive workout. By the end of the 90 days I was doing eight sets of 20-25 pullups per set, depending on the grip. At that rate, about 200 pullups in an hour workout.
You can go up significantly in a short amount of time, but with that said 50 pullups is EXTREME to say the least and I can't even imagine how much time it would have taken me to get there. The "pros" they had in the P90x workouts might pull off a 35 rep set, but that was about the most I saw any of their ringers do.
Oh and I range about a flyweight 150-160 lbs depending on fitness level. I think 30 in one set was the most I was able to do trying to show off, but that was maxed out and struggling. Now I am 46 and taking another whack at it, back to 10 per set.

Sounds pretty good to me. I do think being lighter helps for some reason even if the bigger guy has more muscle mass. Pullups are just a weird exercise.
I also HATE pullups the way I hate certain types of curls. I will do bench press or other things all day, but pullups just suck for some reason. I am starting to try to work out regularly again and thinking I need to start doing more pullups to work my way back to where I was, but then I think, "Ah who are you kidding, you hate pullups, just do more bench and be done with it."

Well there is plenty of alternative good exercises for your back you can do to build density and muscle back there so your not lopsided from all those bench presses

After 16 years of consistent weight lifting/body building I'm happy to report ive made some more progress at 41 years old. Any gains at all after this long should be celebrated and savored as the consensus among builders, and I know there have been years in past where ive made none at all so I am pretty happy and feel more motivated to keep it going. This last year ive focused more on getting the right kind and amount of calories and adding a work out day in the week to 4 total rather then 3. Ive added roughly 6lb with most of that % in muscle putting me at 196lb at 5 11" and staying around 12-13% body fat. Ive seen my strength overall go up in the gym on lifts and am regularly doing 85-90 push ups in one shot every morn. My pull ups have increased by 2-3. So 22 pull ups. Just came across this thread again and thought id post progress and see if OP or anyone else has any progress with what they are doing to report.

If pullups are a weakness for you then this is great. They for sure are a weakness for me. Like Junky said going from doing nothing to doing something will be good no matter what just don't forget there is other movements and muscle groups that this and the push ups ignore.

A little late to the party here but yeah 50 pull ups is insane. I've only known one person who could ever do that and he weighed 145lbs. He did 55 pull ups, for real. He was about 5'9" and a genetic freak. When he knocked out sets of 15 just playing around, he looked he was filled with helium...lol. Other than that I've never personally seen anyone do over the low 20's. I've only done 20 once in my life. That was weighing about 205 or so. I think back in my powerlifting days when I could do 10 reps with a 45lb plate at 215lbs bw, I could have also done 20 unweighted. Now a days I weigh around 210 WHEN I'm in shape and on a GREAT day I may get over 15. Right now I'm fattened up for the season at 225 softer pounds and I'd be lucky to get 10...lol. Bodyweight plays a huge role here. I don't think there is any way I could ever top 20 without getting ripped down to under 200lbs. I'm 6'2" also.
