This thread isn't intended to provide new info; it's just a summary of what's in several threads and sites (which are referenced here). Also, to limit the scope, I haven't attempted to address non-Honda filters. Thanks to all who've done research on this, especially marcucci and Road Rage. Comments and corrections are welcome.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Honda 15400-PCX-004
Recommended for the S2000? YES.
Photo

Comments: Originally made in Japan by Toyo Roki Mfg. (now made in the U.S. by Filtech -- see Note #1), this is the current Honda OEM filter specified (worldwide?) for use in the S2000 only. It superseded the U.S.-spec 15400-P0H-305 in mid-2003. As reviewed by Road Rage at http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=191911, this filter has good construction and good filter media.
NOTES:
1) In 2007, North American market PCX-004's began being produced in the U.S. by Filtech. Despite the move to a six-hole end plate (rather than eight as shown above), the Filtech PCX-004's are effectively identical in design and quality to the Toyo Roki PCX-004's, as documented here: http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=473347 .
2) As described here, the Toyo Roki filter appears to be identical to the HAMP filter.

Honda 15400-P0H-305
Recommended for the S2000? YES, esp. for shorter drain intervals.
Photo

Comments: Made in the U.S. by Filtech, this is the original OEM filter specified for the S2000 in the U.S. for MY00-MY03. It has been superseded by the 15400-PCX-004. As reviewed by marcucci at http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml, this filter has good construction, but the filter media is not great ("fuzziness" may be a concern for extended drain intervals). If you still have these lying around, there's no need to toss them.

Honda 15400-PR3-014
Recommended for the S2000? YES.
Photo

Comments: Made in Japan by Toyo Roki, this is the original OEM filter specified for the S2000 in Japan for MY00-MY03. It has been superseded by the 15400-PCX-004. As reviewed by marcucci at http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml, this filter has good construction and good filter media.

Honda 15400-PT7-005
Recommended for the S2000? NO.
Photo

Comments: Made in Canada by Fram, this is the original OEM filter specified for the S2000 (and most Honda cars) in Canada for MY00-MY03. It has been superseded by the 15400-PCX-004 for the S2000, and by the 15400-PLM-A01 for other Honda cars. As reviewed by marcucci at http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml, this filter has mediocre construction and filter media, and is distinctly smaller than the U.S. and JDM filters. They were common in the U.S. as substitutes for the 15400-P0H-305 when dealer stock ran low. If you still have these lying around, use them on your Civic or toss them.

HAMP Synergy (model ??)
Recommended for the S2000? YES.
Photo

Comments: Made in Japan, marketed by Honda under the name HAMP (Honda Aftermarket Parts). Appears to be essentially identical to the 15400-PCX-004. As reviewed by marcucci at http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml, this filter has good construction and good filter media.

Honda 15400-PLM-A01
Recommended for the S2000? NO.
Photo
(photo by H and A Accessories)

Comments: Made in the U.S. by Filtech, this is the current universal Honda OEM filter specified for use in most Honda cars, but NOT the S2000. It is distinctly smaller than the U.S. and JDM S2000 filters.

Honda 15400-PLM-A02
Recommended for the S2000? NO.

Comments: Made in the U.S. by Fram, and probably equivalent to the Fram part #7317 pictured above, this was the universal Honda OEM filter specified for use in most Honda cars until mid-2003, but NOT the S2000. It is distinctly smaller than the U.S. and JDM S2000 filters, and was widely recognized as being a generally poor-to-mediocre filter.

Good Information. Sure saves lots of time and confusion on what the other filters does and which one is the best for our cars. Good job, Thanks.

Man, that FRAM looks like such a POS. Can't believe I used to use those things in my Nissan years back. It's nothing but PCX from here.

Just keep in mind that the Hamp H1540-PR3-408 is no longer made. They now have a much smaller filter that didn't seem to tighten down all the way on a few of our local guys' cars.

When i got my s2k i though i was getting one of the fastest cars on the street, but i have lost my share of drag races, then i learned what the s2k is about.

So its not called the S 2000 for nothing!!!!

what do you mean that the 15400-P0H-305 may cause fuziness? what do you mean by fuziness? that the filter material may break down and clog the oil?

Please do NOT refer to that "old" filter review link. The new one can be found here:

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

The Fram and Filtech filters I believe are no longer available and out of date. The only filters available anymore are the first (S2000 specific one) and the "new" small one that is recommended for everything else. I believe this filter is the same in size as most Mazda filters.

The "fuzzy" media of the Filtech was never a "problem" as that was on the pressure side (inside) of the filter media. It probably actually helped to trap particles.

Do a web search if you want to see why Fram filters are bad, or read the links already provided. They are generally regarded as the worlds cheapest and worst filter. There is plenty of bad info out there BUT I can also tell you that 99.9% of Honda owners can use them and never have any trouble. I was weened in a family that changed oil every 3k miles with a Fram filter bought at Wal-Mart. Never had an engine failure.

But not too tight- that's a good way to dislodge or tear the gasket and create a leak.

I had to go to 2 dealerships to get the 15400-PCX-004. The first one said "This is the filter we use on all of our cars now. There is no 'special' s2000 filter." I gave him the pcx part #, he looked it up and called a guy and said it works for the s2000 but it isnt required. He insisted the PLM one was correct, I said whatever and left. The second dealership I go in and say "s2000 filter, please" the guy comes back with a PCX and I told him about the previous dealership and he smirked.

hello.gif I was about ready to use my last filter from a supply that I had purchased from H&A last year. I needed to pick up some Honda MTF which H&A does not seem to have on their website when I ran across an on-line coupon for Fairfax Honda in Virginia. It is good for 15% off over the counter parts sales and buy three get one free on the oil filters. I did the math including shipping and no tax versus tax and calculated a break even point of $7.53. Fairfax Honda had the new 15400-PCX-004 filters as the new one for the S2000 for $7.50 and that included the drain plug washers (which I no longer need thanks to oil drain petcock).
