So I had an "invisible" bra put on my 2000 the other day. The car is 4 years old with 17000 miles. The paint is flawless. Or at least it was. The guy who applied the bra assured me that there was no need to get a precut kit. He could make it look just as good by cutting it himself. He gave me a quote of $300. It took him like 6 hours to install it and it looks like CRAP! He trimmed the damn thing on the car...with a reeeaaaalllly sharp blade. You know what that means. Cut marks in the paint now. The bra in not symetrical from side to side, it has mad orange peel in it, jagged shitty cuts, the seams overlap, and it has 2 hairs under it. Now the bra can come off, which it will as soon as possible. The scratches however are a different story. I fear that when i pull it off I am gonna pretty much have the outline of it scratched into my paint. If that is the case it will take $1163 to fix it according to the estimate that i went and got today. I really hope that i dont have to go that route. Oh and they sat stuff on my hood and left scratches in the center and top of it. of course they deny that. They are refunding my money to me but now look at the scratched mess that i am left with. The point of this post is to 1. inform u guys to make sure that you never take your car to Auto Trim Design in Lexington KY, and to 2. ask if anyone can recommend an outstanding shop in KY to reapply a new bra.

Have you thought about small claims court to seek damages? If the cut marks match the shape of the bra, it should be pretty easy to prove. I'm really sorry about the damage.

I have been doing installs for apx. 4 years and have this on all my vehicles (including 3x on my S2000 with aftermarket bumpers) of course we had to use raw material to complete this but they sell special tools for cutting. I did have the person responsible for training me do 85% of the install (hands were nervious) and the install took 6 hours (with a few beers and breaks included). It all depends on who is doing the install and how long they have been doing the installs on vehicles.
its always better to get the precut kit and pay the exta cash vs the raw material and allow someone to cut on the paint, thats just wrong IMO and they should fix it or not have taken the job . Sorry to hear about that! -------------------- Tim Ham

I'm sorry, but I can't understand why anyone would NOT use a precut kit. It seems like the raw material would be much more difficult to use and take much more time to put on properly without scratching or damaging the paint in any way.
Bottom line, the shop that put it on should pony up and replace your bumper. |

I've been doing paint protection film exclusively for over 4 years now( couldn't get my old "Speed 2000" handle to log in anymore??) and I can trim on the paint, but I don't like to at all if I have a choice, using a pre-cut kit is by far safer. Getting the feel just right as to how much pressure is just enough is the hardest thing to master. In the summer time, it cuts like butter on hot days and in the winter, its like...cold butter.
If they did such an outstandly crappy looking install, I would bet you have lots of scratches in the paint, and not just on the bumper. Better include the mirrors, hood and fenders( wherever they put the film ) into the estimate. People like that are one reason this product has yet to take off in the mainstream. S2kjunkie may never again give this product another try and that's a shame. Even if he still wants it, he needs to wait until the paint has properly cured, its really only safe for factory paint anyway. If the repaint is just sprayed over the damaged areas, the film will probably pull it off since it hasn't bonded to primer. First thing you want to do is contact the shop and find out their insurance company is and go visit an agent to show him the damages ( along with your receipt from the shop ). Let him see the damaged areas for himself and take lots of pictures when removing the film to show the marks. Your probably going to get a runaround so be patient and don't lose your cool. They have incurred damages and are responsible so don't let it upset you into a shouting match, its just a car to the insurance company. Not to put any blame on you, but anyone expecting to get a professional "clear bra installation" on an S2000 is looking at $700 minimun at my shop. Three hundred dollars would sound like a good deal, especially if you just got off the phone with me. Like I said, I'm not pointing the finger at you s2kjunkie, they may have been the only place around offering the film and you didn't have any choice. You made a smart decision to protect you Honda with the film, you just got a butchered installation. Now let's say you did have a choice of installers and one guy says $600 and the other says $300. Logically you think the guy wanting $600 is a crook. Your install is probably going to cause you more hassels getting fixed than the price difference, not to mention the cost involved in getting your car painted. I hope anyone reading this thread that is interested in getting a "professional" job done will take more into consideration than going with the lowest bidder. |

Thanks for all your help you guys. I havent been able to get on here because of the work that was being done to the site. So to answer your question Speed 2004, no i did not pic the lowest price. I actually asked around and went to several different shops. They all either didn't install the product or, as with one place, just said no due to the level of difficulty involved on our cars. When I originally went by the "butcher shop" to get the estimate i saw that they were installing it on an is300 and some other nice car that i cant remember. Anyways, i assumed that since they were working on higher end cars that the job would be done very professionally. Obviously I was wrong. Also, I too thought that the price was low but i have had them tint the windows on other cars of mine and they always underprice the rest of the shops and do a very good job. This too led me to believe that i would get a quality install. Now I guess I need to know what i will have to do to get the film off. Oh and the repair estimate does include the hood, fenders and mirrors.
