just a little 4 cylinder rollinglaugh.gif ...that's one fast hatch, but its quite a bit more than "just a little 4 cylinder." these guys mention at the end of the video that its been built by some tuner. but boy did they conveniently leave out an entire laundry list of additional modifications, b/c clearly there's alot more done to this car than just a build. how about an endless list of bolt-ons and a fully stripped interior - save for the dash. what kind of tires is he wearing? he sure got off the line well for a FWD making a significant amount of power (granted the gap was amplified by the Supra's lack of traction/driver skill early on). might anyone know a thing or two about this car that can shed light on the results we see?

And I think we can all agree that 400RWHP for the Supra is pretty lightly modd'd as far as Supras go.

That civic was stripped down to nothing as well...most of the modified Supras I have seen have no regard for weight reduction. They generally have full interiors and then some. Strip that thing down and slap a T88 on it and let's see the race again...

ok... and throw a bunch of other stuff on the hatch... I always love these what ifs and could have been from people! Of course things could have been different but its still pretty cool that a cheap little civic hatch can beat off the line some serious straightline cars!

Is this the first time you've seen something like this...if so I can post some videos of beat up looking Civic hatches walking all over Dodge Vipers. There is no rocket science to making something fast...throw some money and mods at anything and it will be faster.

Cheap little civic is relative in this case...how much did the owner spend on his mods? Oh you don't know...so maybe it wasn't 'a cheap little Civic' after all. How much you wanna bet the Civic has more money tied up in mods then that Supra?

i totally agree - i could honestly care less about what would happen of the Supra went home, further modified his ride, and returned for another race. its clear toward the end of the 3rd race that the Supra is the faster (not quicker) car. i'd just like to know what's done to this hatch that allowed it to get off the line so well and hold the lead well into the triple digits.

i have a buddy who's weight reduced 1900-lb. CRX w/ B16A swap, I/H/E, and 75 shot of nitrous is by no means faster than my Supra. but he gets down the 1320-ft. quicker than i do. at no point in our races is the gap as large as the one i keep seeing in this video, and i'm defintiely not making 400whp (i'm probably closer to 350-370whp if i had to venture a guess without backing it up with dyno #'s). i have at most 100-lbs weight reduction, and have never worn anything stickier than street tires.

so i can only think so many scenarios to explain this vid: 1) this hatch is using nitrous, 2) the Supra is making far less than 400whp, or 3) the Supra just has a horrible driver (and i did notice that he was not brake-boosting at the start of each roll race). of course none of these can be the definitive truth without at least vaguely knowing what's done to the hatch.

well seeing as how a TBE and boost controller costs a Supra owner at most $1500 (and can often be done for less than $1000), i will not take that bet sir wink.gif . even without the built motor mentioned in the video, i bet the Civic has more $ invested in modifications.

I'm just saying that there is always the naysayers with videos like this. Like, 'if this didn't have a gutted interior, or if the supra had a faster driver'. I'm just sick of hearing about all the what ifs of stuff like this.

Yes, cheap is a relative term, but i don't see Supra's being as cheap as a Honda hatch. Last time i checked Supra's still keep quite a premium on the used car market! Yes Supra's can be made fast cheaply, but that of course, is why its even more satisfying to see a cheap little honda hatch destroying it off the line! I relate it back to the old story of David and Goliath, I'm always an advocate for the under dog!

I agree that it's great to root for the underdog but I think the old days of 'it's just a lil 4 banger' have long since been played out. I have had quite a few 400+WHP 4 bangers and while it's always fun I think that looses alot of it's luster when you're talking about a car with a built engine/motor swap and gutted interior. There is alot to be said for cars with full interiors and all of the 'creature comforts' but still perform well. I think we all know the mod potential of the Supra and you're right...they carry quite a premium, you can't find a decent Supra these days for under $35K.

...so perhaps they weren't talking about a built motor in the video. i guess they just meant the build was "done by so-and-so."
