Farewell to Alex!
Just wanted to make a thread to wish our buddy and photog a fun, safe, and productive expedition to Antarctica. Hope you have a great time, a safe time, and come back with all your fingers and 200 gigs of photos. Wish you all the best, and hope you post some photos if you have access to wifi once in a while.
Safe journey my friend!
P.S. If you can get shots of emperor penguins, that would be awesome.
P.P.S. Bring a portable hard-drive, and back everything up twice, once on your laptop, and once on your hard-drive. It would be a MAJOR bummer if something happened and you lost the photos.

Thanks Dave, but I don't leave till October 14th.
I've got 3 pairs of gloves for the fingers (2 pairs that will work with the camera ). I'm taking almost a terabyte of storage: 1 laptop with 200 GB free on a 320GB HD, a 250GB external and a 320GB external plus an iPod and all that stuff. I definitely plan on being the back-up-crazed fool.
Thanks for the thread - I can't wait.....don't tell my boss, but I think I've already left

Have a great trip...I understand from friends who have been that the seas can be rough down there, so be prepared!

Best of luck!
As a side note, how well does your camera work down there? I know most cameras warn about performance loss/issues with temps below freezing (though I suspect your camera is made to take it somewhat).

Temps should be from 30-50 degrees. Well above freezing and right in optimum operating ranges. I've been told it shouldn't be much of a worry, but I am taking 5 batteries....not for the cold, but for the 32GB's of memory cards I'll have with me. If I want to go Japanese-tourist on the shutter, I can
Deb - yeah, the Drake Passage is a bitch. I hear most crews rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 and 30 foot seas are a 4
