I'm looking for a box and sub to fit in the 'normal' space where people put them..
I want to be able to still put things on top of the sub, since we have barley any space at all...I'm willing to buy a used box and sub, or just the box. I only want 1, 10" and have it ready to have my shop install it. Please PM me for any used equip or reply to this post for recommendations.

Thanks jc

The JL Audio Stealthbox is the standard answer but $$. I've got the same 10W3v3 woofer in the uber-cheap E-bay box (two thumbs up from me) and the JL grill (sold separately) does allow me gently load stuff over it but not really as sturdy as some custom protective rails I've seen.

Yeah, that's WAY too expensive...I'm looking for a $200/$250 deal.....I don't need a sub that requires an amp...My head unit should run it fine....I just need about 2-3 times the bass I have now from my door speakers...Your weren't kidding about the price...Hopefully there is a another alternative.

Thanks for the info.

18WRMS isn't even the true story. Most HUs on the market could barely touch 18W when playing music. 5WRMS to a sub. That MIGHT be enough to warm the voice coil a bit... and by a bit, I mean 1-2 degrees...

I was ignorant and after talking to a bunch of people...
I got one of the S2000 boxes from Ebay, a Clarion amp 300 watts RMS, and a 10" Infinity Reference sub....Hopefully that will give me a decent boom..

Thanks for the advice...I'm sure my shop would have laughed if I tried to not install an amp for my sub.

Quick questions:
1) Where do I get a grill for the sub so I can put a bag on top of it
(washing supplies)?
2) Where do you put the the jack and lug wrench and how do you lock them down so they don't rattle.

Thanks!

You don't have to worry about the jack and lug wrench if, like me, your amp rack takes up the space where that spare tire was...

Hmmm, I have Progessive road assistance so I could go that route too, but I'd feel weird not having a spare tire and jack....Not sure where 'they' are going to install my amp....It's a Clarion and not too big...Maybe underneath one of the seats. Not sure where else it could go.

this grill should work:

and if you do opt to forgo the spare tire, this is the amp rack/board you want:

under-seat is no-go. Did you think this through? what is the use of having tools if the wheel you remove can't fit in the trunk anymore? the trunk is designed to fit one wheel standing up in the tool well. Do what most people do; buy a can of fix-a-flat and a AAA membership... Progressive roadside assist should do nicely also; their service is through Cross Country Auto Club.

I'd like to keep the spare if possible...The amp is not big, so I'm hoping my installer has another place he can put it....The fix a flat stuff trashes the $225 a piece tires I have, so of course I want my spare....I've been told to never use that stuff unless it's emergency.. I used it once and it trashed the inside of the tire.

Carry a 'sticky string' tire repair kit and a 12V compressor, doesn't trash the TPMS or piss off the repair guys later. I got lots of practice fixing flats on my bikes.

You missed the main point Will was making. Once you add a sub to the toolwell area, you lose the ability to carry the damaged wheel you take off the car. So keeping the spare is rather pointless.

I suppose you could try standing the wheel on the passenger seat, assuming you're driving alone.

Didn't think about that philbert, but I do usually drive alone. I'm surprised as to how expensive this whole sub deal is...Right around $400 for all the parts and install...Hopefully it's worth it.

1) Clarion 2 channel amp
2) Infinity 10" Reference sub
3) Sub enclosure
4) Labor

Honestly...you can better spend the money.

Although, if I were you, I'd save up a little more and do it right the first time. I've literally thrown away thousands of dollars on stereo equipment that I didn't like, or upgraded out of, etc.

This time around, with the truck, I spent weeks pouring over spec sheets and response charts before picking my woofers - did the same for my tweeters. Took another 4-5 months to save all the $$$$ I needed to buy the pieces. I just finished my amp rack - took 3-4 days.

Point is, don't throw your money away on something that's not going to be as good as you'd hoped.

I don't want a big pumping system and I know I'm not going to get that with a 10"..I've been told by a few folks that my new Clarion 2-way amp and Infinity Reference sub will work out well....Also I've read a bunch of reviews about 'people'/companies that make the custom box for the S2000 and they've all had good reviews as well...I'll have it all installed by next Sat and let you all know how it sounds...

It's not about having a "big pumping system." It's about the sound quality of the system.

A 12" sub is > a 10" sub because it covers a much lower frequency range than a 10" does. So you have better reproduction through a larger range of the music frequencies being played. And given that a sub only reproduces a 50-60Hz range, adding another 10Hz to the lowest end (that no other speaker is going to touch) is a huge relative increase in how that sound is reproduced. Tell you what, if you haven't bought the sub already, hold off until you can hear what I have. If you've already ordered the sub, then you can put it in (if you like) and when you're ready, I'll drive down to NOVA and let you hear the difference between an OK 10" and a SQ built 12" (mind you, my 12" only costs $250).

I don't have a powerful system because I want it to get loud. Does it get loud? Sure. But that's because volume will follow the quest for sound quality. SQ requires lots of power, only we look for clean power - not just to brag about how many watts we have. My car puts out maybe 750 watts. And I bet it's louder and sounds better than many of the 1000W+ systems on the board.

Who wrote the reveiws? What website were they on? Crutchfield? I don't trust that site for reviews. Know why? Because they don't offer anything better than Best Buy or Circuit City, etc. And since they don't offer the higher end stuff, the reviews they have are skewed to what they do carry. So when a reviewer on Crutchfield says "it's the best component set I've ever heard," I have to take that with the grain of salt that says that they likely haven't heard anything except the range of stuff that Crutchfield sells. And given that there's an entire market of much higher quality speakers (and not that much more expensive than what Crutchfield has) that sound infinitely better than what Crutchfield has, I have to consider that Crutchfield review to be a worthless review.

It's like someone that's only ever eaten fast food writing a review saying that McDonalds is the best hamburger they've ever eaten. And that may very well be true - relative to what they've eaten. But that doesn't mean it's actually a good hamburger... lol.gif

Neutered Sputniks, I've already received the amp, sub, and the box should be here on Thursday...It will all be installed on Sat, so we shall see how well it performs...I appreciate the explanation and your right about the reviews...No high end 'stuff' to review on 'Crutchfield', or Best Buy...I'm just hoping everything compliments itself and it sounds good to me, since that's all that really matters..

Indeed.

And it's not that I'm trying to put you down, not at all. I just wish someone had taken me by the hand all those years ago and taught me the difference between OK and Excellent. All the $$$$$ I would have saved over the years... smile.gif

I had everything installed and I'm very surprised how well it sounds...I couldn't be happier, but I guess I wouldn't know as I'm not a sub guy...Great box, great amp, great sub, and great install....I had (them) put the amp on the right side of trunk as I wanted to keep my spare...All in all a good deal...Thanks for the help and advice..
