I'm curious at what temps people are using the top without damaging it. If you have damaged the top by using it when it was too cold out feel free to post details in the thread.

Please excuse any incorrect or strange F to C conversions in the poll.

I've done it in the 40's and nothing happened, but after reading threads, I won't be making a habit of it anymore unless I've run the heater or let it be in the sun for a while to warm it up.

What changed with the top in 2002? ponder2.gif

I wouldn't operate it under freezing but if you're opening the top that cold you are crazy and the top is the least of your worries.

Why would anyone do that? Just to see if it would work. Surely no one drove like that? That's around -31 F! Can you even breathe in air that cold? 0 F is the coldest I've ever experienced and even without wind it hurt to breathe.

2002 and later had a glass rear window. 2000 & 2001 are rear windows plastic.

40°F is about the coldest that I have had the top down in the S. Some years back I had the top down in my '62 Impala at 25°F. That car had a plastic rear window and it survived without cracking.

I'd like to hear from the person that damaged a part of the top that isn't the window. What happened? How cold was it? Were you putting it up or down?

coldest that I put the top down was the winter of 03/04 in Maine.. I had to let it get warm with the heater otherwise it wouldn't even begin to fold..

temps without windchill were around 50 below zero.. (colder than the north pole) but my policy was, it's not raining or snowing, the top is down..

also, with the windows up, and the heater turned to the position where your legs and abdomen stay warm and wearing a coat and hat, it wasn't bad inside the car..

No thank you! I wouldn't survive 2 minutes in 50 below zero.

What is the point of driving with the top down in weather like that? augen40.gif

I had the top down at 35 degrees only because I thought it was a lot warmer - usually it's down until around 40. I do get looks though.

last winter, i broke my rear plastic window. IIRC, it was in the low 30's one night, and tried to put the top down. it stopped in the middle, but i was stubborn, and soon heard a pretty loud pop. after putting the top back up, i found a vertical crack (around 7-8 inches).

good news is...it made me replace that old, foggy piece of plastic with a new one. cost me $200 and a half day's work.
