I'm looking to either lease something around 400-450 a month or buy something cheap around 5-10k....probably going the leasing route so I don't have any issues to worry about..... AWD is key
Here's what I've been looking at BMW 328XI, 5 door WRX, Honda CRV, Acura version of CRV, Honda Pilot, Acura TL SH AWD (I think this may be too much), Mercedes e300 4motion, Audi A4 2.0, Toyota Matrix awd. Any other suggestions? This post has been edited by josserman on Nov 7 2009, 12:39 PM --------------------

yea I had a nice a4 3.2 it was great in the snow...kinda sick of the a4 body roll and not sure I would be happy going from a 3.2 to 2.0 so thats kinda out...probably going to end up with the 328, but the TL sh awd is really nice so is the RDX.

I vote Acura RDX (their small SUV). The turbo engine makes good power, you get lots of tech goodies, decent cargo capacity, and their SH-AWD is perhaps the best in the industry. Not only does it offer all-weather traction but it's downright sporty by accelerating the outside wheel in corners to power you through.

Exactly my point. Why lower your selection of cars when a set of good snow tires will make any car good in the snow. |

Outback or Forester XT... you will want nothing else...

Subaru doesn't do torque vectoring and at this point neither does Quattro (although I hear its in the works). SH-AWD does. |

If I where buying a daily driver I would just go buy a Hyundai and order a winter tire and wheel package from tire rack. I have rented a hyundai a few times to go down to NC. It's really not a bad car it was good on gas plenty of power and handled well. IMO a front wheel drive car is the best thing in the winter months. If the conditions are so bad that you need all wheel drive to get around then you should probably not be driving anyway. Not to mention in our area even when we get hammered with snow the reality is the roads are clear by the next day. --------------------

Great point. If you can't get around in FWD you probably don't have any business being out in the first place. If you are good at modulating the throttle and finessing braking you can do very well in FWD. BTW they are introducing a FWD RDX this year for less money and better MPG than she SH-AWD version. |

We had a 330xi with performance tires, terrible in the snow.
Then had a 325ci (RWD) with snow tires, amazing in the snow, 10x better than the 330xi. The 330xi with snows would have been amazing. However, the disadvantage of AWD (in most cases) didn't seem seem worth it to me just for 5-10 days of bad snow a year. That being said, I'd look for something more "fun". How about the Mazdaspeed 3? -------------------- ![]()
