So I know with all the new technology out both of these cameras are a little outdated, however they are vastly better than my current Olympus e500. I cant decide which one to buy. I know the Nikon is faster, the s3 pro has higher dynamic range and more megapixels but I just cannot decide which one to go with.

Im leaning towards the D1x because it is a little cheaper, but was a much better camera for its time.

I am looking for your all's advice. My shooting style is mostly automotive and motorcycle track days, car shows (indoor and outdoor) and some small club concert photography.

Based on these details I am leaving my purchasing decision in your hands... Sorta, lol

How did you narrow your choice down to these two? Is it based on prices you are getting from some dealer? What's your price point?

keep saving and buy a used D300
D1x and D2x are heavy and somewhat weather proof

D1x is to old tech, you will need several batteries 150-200 shot per battery
D2x is ok, anything past 400 is grainy

but the D300 is great, Batteries last 1000 shots, iso is awesome 200-3200
now the D300s is out D300 have come down in price, some

My price point is around $400. I wanted to get a "professional" level camera under that price range. I know im being picky and there are much better options for slightly more coin, but being a college student I have to make do with what I got. Thanks for your input

^ I understand that you want "pro" level at $400 but the cold hard reality is $400 will barely buy you a quality point and shoot nowadays let alone a current pro body.

I fully understand that which is why I am looking at older bodies.

I guess I am trying to get an understanding as whether or not an old D1x body would be as good as lets say a current D90.

I appreciate all your guys feedback. If I had $1,000 to spend it would make my decision much easier. I played around with a D300 and fell in love, just trying to get something close for my price range, and thought going used would be the way to go

If you are going to be shooting moving subject matter like those at track days you are looking at the wrong camera system. Especially if you are looking at older bodies. Back then Nikon's AF system couldn't do it, nor keep up with the demands. Look at a Canon 10D, it will be cheap, have a decent AF, and is made with a magnesium alloy frame. OR, buy a new entry level system and get past the "pro" thing.

As I was out and about today I stopped by my camera shop and got to try some stuff out.

Long and short of it is I decided to muscle up and get the 50D. Thank you for all your opinions as they helped me see the error in my logic and helped me really narrow down where I want my photography to go
