Me and my girl friend was at a light today in my 2002 s2000 with NOS and a black family sedan that looked like a mid 80s Monte Carlo ss with a bulge in the hood pulled next to me. the driver grinned, nodded and threw me some revs:rev: i returned the favor and when the lights turned green we floored it, i got the jump on him but that did not last, this car passed me like I was standing still, I hit the NOS but he still pulled away:eek3: , I shut down at 120 and he was about 15-20 cars ahead of me. The strange thing was the car was VERY quiet, it did have an odd whistle. the tag sed turbo6, did chevy make a turbo ss Monte Carlo v6? If not WTF was that thing?

Buick Grand National. Fast as SHIAT! Turbo V-6, HIGH mod potential. Very special cars, most guys that own them take good care of them and love to race unsuspecting car owners.

Heh heh, I just went and did a little research. Found a Forumn www.montecarLOSS.com. Looks like the majority of MonteCarlos have 5 litre (305 ci) V-8's, but this is the same body style as the Buick Grand National, so I am guessing that you ran into a Modded GM Twin Turbo V-6. Whether it was a Buick or a Chevy is irrelevant.

I've raced a 305 MonteCarlo SS from a stop light without even trying (2K RPM start), and KILLED him upon shifting into 3rd gear, my S2000 is stock. This is about the same result when I race 5.0 mustangs. SO the car you raced is obviously very special and by no means the norm for that car.

Black GN, could have been a GNX (ultra rare) but most probably a "normal" GN, which for the most part these days (this long in their life) was modded nicely. I sold my '87 with 28K for $12K last January. Getting those in the 12's isn't terribly difficult. A nice aftermarket support system even after all these years. By the distance you specified, he
definitely wasn't stock. Most stock GN's were high 13-second, low 14-second 1/4-milers that did not purr on the top end due to the crappy aerodynamics. Then again, you can
usually overcome that with increased boost, yada...yada...yada...you guys know the drill.

"Modded Twin Turbo V-6" LOL!

Sounds like a Turbo Regal (The Grand National is a subset of Turbo Regals), which would need very few mods to do what the original poster described. And no Turbo Regals came with a twin turbo. The only guys running twins are the hard-core drag racers running 8- and 7-second 1/4 miles. You're more likely to run into a GNX than a twin turbo Regal.

Put it this way fellas....if you come across a GN owner and he's revving on you, chances are he's not stock. In that case, if you want to run 'em, enjoy the show but the ending will come by as soon as the opening credits start. For less than $1K, you can create a late 80's "general" that would give most C5's the fits. It's almost comical how GM lied about the turbo Regal's horsepower rating (especially true with the GNX and 20th Trans-Am) just to protect Corvette 's image as being the king of the hill for the company. It was common knowledge the GNX was dyno'ing higher than its rated crank figure. You can usually find one once every few months on eBAY for around $30K. Stock, they are low 13's.
As for stock GN's, of which we have a fairly even shot at competing with in the 1/4, finding 'em unmodified is getting increasingly rare. Most owners who truly love thier GN keep phenominal care of 'em and start "improving" their products with the same ferocity that everyone else does. Bottom line...in the pecking order of acceleration, they aren't to be messed with. This is one domestic automobile that deserves our respect, though truth be told, if the race was held on a winding stretch of road, it would be handicapped severely and that is the only acerage I could see the S2000 kicking its ass.
