This may seem like a stupid question, but I have seen this springed retainer setup on a header before, and was curious - wtf?
What purpose does it serve?
Is the connection welded?
It seems very un-minimalistic to me - maybe I'm missing something, please someone tell me I'm missing something.

Buddy Club USA is in process of setting up a dyno of the header, as well as getting me all the dia. specs etc.

I took the time today to measure the Buddy Club racing spec header i had on display for AP1/AP2 today, since buddy club is being slow with the numbers.
the Header uses 1.1mm thickness stainless steel. making it pretty light. The J's however, is still lighter due to the lack of slip joints the Buddy Club one has. They are pretty darn close tho!
It looks to be a well made piece. my only 2 gripes are this:
- where the primaries meet the flange, they chose to like ass in extra material to get the the more oval shape, making for, i think a less natural flow.
- where the secondaries join, there is a bit of a bottle neck then it flairs out to the 62.5mm
Primary piping - 43mm ID
Secondary piping - 48mm ID
(bottle neck) - 51mm ID
Collector - 62.5mm
DETAILED PICS:
