I had the opportunity to take another members soft top but at the end of the day, I felt like it was too much of a hassle.

That's definitely a thing I think. I found this CoverCraft one that isn't that expensive. It seems to just tie to the handles to keep it from flying off. I've also seen ones for the Miata that can be stretched over while driving to make some temporary cover, but I can't remember what they're called.
