If u slap on a FI kit on either motor out the box, this means not upgrading anything at all even oil, then the Ap2 is superior. But if u upgrade the valve train and maybe diff, they are pretty equal.

If built right, they can both rev to the moon.

So much misinformation!!!

The reason why all ap2 parts mention will last longer if driven within reason is because they are newer !!!

Uhh take the same mileage engines bud ^. Stock vs stock with an FI kit only( FI ONLY NOTHING else) it's a no brainer that the ap2 will last longer. It's different when u add supporting mods.

100% stock vs stock, then yes the AP2 engine is more reliable. With $50 in valvetrain parts, they should be equal, its a mute point to argue stock vs stock. Especially since the stock clutch wont hold any FI, anyone putting a turbo on an S2k should not be deterred by the need to swap valve spring retainers...

00 ap1 here

150k miles boosted (350 whp) for over 40kmikes. Tracked and hard driven. Everything stock even clutch.

Changed the retainer this winter because we ear so much about it. All ok.

I have been doing retainer job on over 15 ap1. Some with more then 200k miles. Never saw a cracked retainer.

Not calling anyone a liar , I know they have reinforced thing such as tranny and diff just outing my experience here.

I would like to add that i just did my retainers last week on my ap1 because of all the hype. My car has been turbo for 2 years and all of my retainers looked great. Not saying its not true but a lot of that stuff on this forum is over hyped so people can buy into building the head.

Retainers typically get damaged from mechanical over rev scenarios not necessarily the rev limiter, which typically happen on the track compared to the street. I.E. shifting at redline, mid corner from 3rd to 2nd, when intending to hit 4th. If you haven't had that happen to the vehicle, there should be no reason the retainers have cracks. People upgrade to the AP2 retainers since they are much more resistant to cracking, during those mechanical over rev situations.

Which will hold power is subjective and will differ with each and every application...very surprising to see a thread like this last so long...
