Default DIY: Install OEM Window Seals on Mugen Replica Hardtop

*****DISCLAIMER***** Carbon fiber dust is a know carcinogen. I suggest wearing a mask.*****DISCLAIMER*****

Coolguy094 was kind enough to document the rear seal. Here is the link to his post on page #2.

Difficulty: Fairly easy
Time: 45-90 minutes

The tools you need:

Painters Tape
Super Glue (not pictured)
Drill
3/16" and 1/4" drill bits (I recommend buying new so they are very sharp)
Pop rivet gun
3/16" diameter (1/8" grip) pop rivets
1/4" plastic rivets

(Plastic rivets bought from Autozone)

(Pop rivets bought from Home Depot)

The parts you need to order from Honda are:

***Prices based on cflhonda.com***

85130-S2A-902 (passenger side seal) - $110.99
85180-S2A-902 (driver side seal) - $110.99
85120-S2A-901 (passenger side metal retainer) -$67.76
85170-S2A-901 (driver side metal retainer) - $67.76

Step 1 - Remove old window seals.

Step 2 - Tape area to be drilled.

(I taped off the car, but wanted people to get a better idea of what was being taped so I threw it on.)

Step 3 - Disregard the worlds ugliest blanket. There's a reason why it's in my garage and not my house.

Step 4 - Line up the metal retainer. Make sure that it is flush with the top and bottom edge (shown below), and make sure it is pushed down flush in the curve. A second person comes in really handy here.

(Disregard the rivets in the pics since we aren't to that step yet)

Step 5 - This is the part where it gets difficult without a second person. Hold the metal retainer in the desired position. Using your drill and the 3/16" drill bit, slowly (as is slow speed on drill and light pressure) drill each of the six holes. I used pop rivets to help keep the retainer in place as we went. DO NOT CLAMP THE RIVETS YET. They were just loosely set in the holes.

Step 6 - Remove the loose rivets and the metal retainer. Pull the painters tape off.

Step 7 - To secure the structure of the carbon fiber, apply a very small amount of super glue to each hole. (not enough to increase the diameter of the hole.

Step 8 - After the glue dries. Place the metal retainer back on the hardtop and loosely place pop rivets in each of the holes.

Step 9 - Using the pop rivet gun, snug each of the pop rivets. Once they are secure, you can go at them again with the gun until they pop off.

Step 10 - Once you have popped all the stems off of the rivets, press the seal into the channel on the metal retainer.

Step 11 - Place on the car, because if you royally mucked up, at least you haven't done both sides yet.

Step 12 - Bask in the glory of how much better the OEM seals fit the the corner of the window.

(If you think you see a gap in mine, you do. I didn't have a lower seal installed when I took this pic.)

Step 13 - Repeat for the other side.

*****I left these next steps out of the earlier process because I drove with a top on for a few days to see how it all felt before I continued. I would even say these steps are optional*****

Step 14 - There is a hole in the seal, that has the circled clip below in it. I used the same 3/16" drill through the hole in the seal, into the area below. The just press the provided clip into the hole to secure the seal.

Step 15 - I have no pics specifically for this step so I will do the best I can. At the top of the seal (near the latches) there is a hole with a metal washer embedded in the seal. Using the 1/4" bit, drill the hole in the top and secure it with the 1/4" plastic rivet. I would not use a regular rivet, as the seals might have to be replaced someday.

Step 16 - ENJOY!!!

It depends where you buy from (dealer, cflhonda, etc). I bought from cflhonda. I will add prices. It isn't cheap but it's worth it for quality and not having to constantly fiddle with them or replace them.

Nice writeup! Can you use self tapping screws instead of rivets? How is that rail held onto the OEM hardtop?

for oem and authentic mugen, the rail is screwed in.

you can use self tapping screws but if you ever plan to remove them, you're not going to be able to put them back in unless you up size the screw since the material is so thin

you just line it up outward as much as possible.

How is the functionality of the OEMs compared to the replica ones?
