If you buy a used differential with gears in it you don't need to break it in as it has already been broken in. Won't know how it was broken in but will have already been through the heat cycle break in process.

im just asking about used gears out of a kia diff or first gen mazda rx7. I would think you dont but want to know for sure.

Yesh you wouldn't have to. When breaking in fests you are heat cycling the actual gears so since they are used shouldn't need to break them in at all.

Even with used gears, it is best to do a short break in.
A freshly built rear using used gears will still need a short break in to seat the bearings and run in the newly set gears. A heat cycle is not necessary but, no hard driving should be done for 200 to 300 miles.
The oil should be changed after 500 for inspection.
