Tracking Stock Car - Need Oil Cooler?
#41
Thanks everyone. Im going to run no cooler and keep an eye on temps and pressure. Trying to keep it simple.
It is just HPDE events at the moment. The GT Channel video is great for representation of hard 20 min session with no cool down laps, but thats not the case for HPDE or even Time Trials.
I currently run shell rotella T5 synthetic blend 10w-30. Change every ~3000 miles or every 2 track days.

i run the T6 and have been for awhile.
Oil temp data data on a SC car from chuckwalla yesterday. After 6 hard laps oil temps stabilized right at 235. No oil cooler just a dual pass radiator. Can't see a need for a cooler. Also I have oil analysis from the T6 on summer months and 4 track days. Viscosity was never under min value and Blackstone has said multiple times I could extend intervals. But with the price of T6 I don't mind the oil change after 4 days.

Does a stock S2000 need an oil cooler?
No.
Is an oil cooler a good investment for a S2000?
Sure.
Ran three years without an oil cooler.
Then ran three years with one.
I liked having additional oil in the lines to keep the engine running cooler, as well as the cooler doing it's job.
he "added complexity" isn't a problem since I go thru the car before and after every event, retorquing suspension, mounts, oil lines, brakes, exhaust components, etc.-- you know, like how you're suppose to before you put a car on a track. Never had a problem.

t5 is a group 2 , t6 is a group 3, amsoil group 4 but they also make a group 5, redline group 5 . I would at least run a solid group 3 to help deal with the heat. I know ap2s that have run t6 with no issue. I was not a fan of running 5w40 (t6) in my ap1. I have had the best luck with Pennzoil platinum 10w30. it fixed my oil burning issues with my brothers and my ap1s

You are talking about a slippery slope when your justification is whether something is worth the investment. I would say proper safety gear is way more worth the investment than an oil cooler. I think the typical reasons that S2000 motors fail on track are pretty well known.
He already owns the oil cooler, so the investment is already done. selling it would only lose on investment.
Scooter, id install it.

I'm not Tut, I'm not willing to run 300F and use golden state oil from the local gas station.
