My ap1 bolt ons 4.77 VS 08 STI

Default My ap1 bolt ons 4.77 VS 08 STI

So me and my cousin ran against each other couple times this weekend. His car is a 100% stock 08 sti (hatch). First race we went from a 40mph roll. I pulled him right away about a car and that's how it went all the way to about 90mph or so. Next we ran it again but this time at 60mph roll. He pulled me about a car and started pulling away slowly. I do have a vid of the 60 roll but not sure how to upload for everyone to watch. But does this seem about right with the mods I have or is my car slow? Some said it's slow and some congratulated me for keeping up in the 60 roll vid. Too bad I couldn't get the 40 roll on vid. So yea here are my mods:

-Act pp,oem disc, act 8lb fw
-4.77 diff
-k&n intake inside oem box w/ spoon duct
-3in test pipe
-3in exhaust

Car has 153k on the motor and eats a quart of oil every 1000 miles. 235 psi compression test on all 4.

Hmmmmm.. I have an AP2 with a test pipe and my friend with a 2012 sti hatch I get him by 2 cars every time (from a roll) by the middle of 5th gear or so.

With your 4.77 you should absolutely be taking him by good amount. Especially if he is stock.

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm probably just slow. I plan to grab a aem ems and tune for next winter project. Btw: both cars are decent drivers so no noobs behind the wheels

This seems right, gears really don't do much as speeds increase. Gears are primarily for low speed acceleration, your 40mph vs 60mph runs prove that. I believe the happy median was 4.44 or 4.56 gears, 4.7s make you shift too much

Sounds about right. The 4.77 gears definitely hurt highway pulls once you're moving but are good for low end pulls.

i cant see how a "final drive" can only show performance low end rather than the entire rev range. It is the final drive that will shortern/lengthen gearing across the entire rev range.... perhaps at 60mph, the variables included ifferent RPM on the WRX and hence was at a time where max boost was available etc.... its a final drive, it increases/decreases accerlartion across the entire rev range...

Per PuddyMod
The 4.30 or 4.44 is the best all round performer, you get better acceleration without much compromise. The Mazda 4.30/ 4.44 will also be OEM quiet when installed right.

The 4.56/4.57 Richmond gear ratio is also a best performer but, there is compromise with using these gears. These gears are no longer made and can be difficult to find and buy in good used condition. The other issue is, gear whine. These gears sing a bit and sound like a super charger.

The KIA 4.77 is a well made gear set and is OEM quiet but performance compromise is made with this choice. You get the best off the line acceleration to about 3rd/4th gear but after that the performance falls off. Each gear tops out very fast with the 4.77 and a car with a longer gear will catch up and pass you.
If you don't do much highway driving and your looking for 0 to 60mph fun this is a great choice.

nice input.. i guess u lose some max speed for the downlow accelration benefit

Run him from a lower speed or change to a taller gear. Tuning won't save physics
