Odd Runs: Story #3 Out Of 3
This was kinda neat... especially considering that these cars... as sharp as they are... have simply became the new ing Taurus! They are a dime a dozen around here!! You can't turn a corner without being blind-sided by 300's with a broader spectrum of drivers then flavors at the Starburst factory!
This one was a dark maroon, and he had already upgraded to some new, kinda cool dark maroon (almost rusty looking) 19's.
He started out in front of me at a light... and with deep throated roar... he was off! I was relatively unexpecting because most in this area treat their new possesion like a thug getting his first Bentley... So by the time I dropped and tried to keep up... he had me by about 3 cars. I caught up quick, and got behind him, half expecting to see him launch again. ...and of course... he did. This time, I was a little more prepared, being in 2nd just shy of Vtec. He still edged me, and I was full bore to keep on his tail.
At the next light, I was able to pull side by side to get an even start. We both creeped out until about 20 and dropped it... being in perfect Vtec, I was able to pull him by about a car and a half this time (with some great shifts) up to 70.
So all in all... for luxury... those hemi's got some good kick...
Next... I want to run the guy a few blocks over who just put his on ing 24's!!! His 300 is jacked up like a ghetto sled fresh with new spokes! ugly... damn ugly...

Funny that you should drop the Bentley analogy because I've wondered if the appeal of the 300 is that it has a Bentley look to it.
'Nways, a co-worker of mine just got one of these and I had a chance to drive it. Pretty impressed. Definitely a long way from some of Chrysler's low points in the 70s and 80s. He really bought into the whole 'hemi' marketing buzz even though he's not a Mopar fanatic and was laying it on a bit thick. I reminded him that I have $50 RC airplane engines with hemispherical combustion chambers so it isn't exactly science fiction technology any more.

wow... I just looked up some dirt on the 300c Hemi... and those are FAST cars! I'm suprised I pulled on him the way I did (although I know the "launch" is the secret to speed- or a lack there of- in the S)

suprised I kept up? Hell... I'm even more shocked that I pulled. Chances are... #1. Not Broken in... #2. Not 100% confident or knowledgable of how to drive it...
I'm sure when we took off, he didn't know where his best powerband was and that allowed me to get a stronger start...

Maybe his aftermarket wheels were heavier than stock and slowed him a bit. Nice kill BTW, I really like the look of the new 300c. The HEMI engine in those cars is quite impressive. The ability the engine has to disengage 4 cylinders at cruising speed is truly innovative and something that I am sure we will see much more of in the future.

exactly... takes away the problem people have with big engines... no effeciency...

In the early 80s, Cadillac had a failed attempt at a variable displacement engine, made I think by Eaton. The technology dates back much further than that. The pushrods and lifters still moved, but the valves were closed when the CPU decided it didn't need all 8. Didn't work out too well back then. But, it seems to be the shape of things to come for a number of automakers.
