Default Honda S2000 vs 350z vs rx-8 which should I get

The new 350z and rx-8 are coming out this fall. I'm leaning more towards the s2000 but its a lot more expensive then the others. and the rx-8 looks like they copied their styling from the s2000

Blitz: as a person in a similar position as you are..here is what i came up with.
1. Do you want a convertable?.. if so.. forget the rest of this list
2. Both the 350Z and RX-8 are going to be in their first production year which brings up several other points.
A. Neither Nissan or Mazda have had a great track record
with first year production of their sports cars.
B. Both of these cars are likely to be marked up significantly
by the dealer due to initial demand.
3. RX-8 looks a lot like the S2000 in various ways..especialy
from behind.... also the RX-8's higher end model will be the
same amount of torque as the S2000 and only 10 more hp...
so do you want a convertable or 4 door?
4. You are wrong about the pricing: 350Z may start at $26*** for the very base model.. but quickly hits the low $30's range when getting one of their packages... and don't forget about adding the expense of 2.B.
The RX-8 stands to be in the low $30's for the 250hp/18" wheel/6 speed version and mid to high $20's for the 210hp/16" wheel/auto version....taking it out of the range of performing next to the S2000 if you opt for the cheaper of the two.
5. Nissan has still not said how much hp the 350 will be (and before you jump on my for this one...)notice that even their website states 280 projected hp (or something to that manner).. i am still hearing anywhere from 250 to 300 on the Z forums.

I like the way the Mazda looks a lot..however, Mazda's reliability track record severly sways me away from it..and also.. they aren't supposed to come out until Jan.-Feb. next year.

My real dilemma was between the S2000 and the 350Z...I picked the S2000..i wanted something different and quite frankly i think that within a year you will be seeing 350's everywhere.... i'd probably be more likely to going back and buying another Supra TT
There's my input anyways.

Oh yeah..forgot to mention.. the real deciding factor for me... I'm a social worker, I couldn't afford the Z or the RX-8 if i wanted to.. i will be leasing the S2000 and neither mazda nor nissan can even come close to touching honda's residual

I was having the same dilemma as you between these three cars. I couldn't wait any longer, so I bought the S2000. I'm very happy with my choice. As for you, since the other two are out or will be out shortly, my best advice is to test drive them all and see which one makes you do this ->

I can't wait any longer, I'm buying an S2000. I'll own a 350Z and RX8 later on, but I think I'd like to wait a year for them to get all the bugs out.

actually, with the 350z, Nissan is attempting to get around the dealer mark-ups by selling the 350z's at MSRP to those people who came in and placed deposits on the cars. they're approaching this the same way lexus approached the launch of the IS300. just letting you know. i'd go with the s2k, i'm in the midst of purchasing one now!

The RX8 is a 4 seater and comes in two configurations a coupe and a touring ?something fastback/hatch whatchamacalla. The 350Z looks MUCH better than the concept shown and one site I visited said Nissan was taking pre-orders for the car for Aug 2002 delivery. It's a daggone much better looking car than any drawings I've seen.

I'd say it'd come down to where do you want to spend your time. Straffing apexes, living at high Rs- S2000, spirited 'highway' - RX8, trolling/crusing for unsuspecting muscle car folks - 350Z.

Should be a nice mix to see additional sport-oriented cars on the road come 2003!

Another consideration is no one really know how those two other cars perform, it may not live up to all the hype that have been generated. So are you willing to wait and find out? if not then the choice is clear. Chances are those two cars are overhyped - it's just part of the marketing strategies.

Here's my take:

350Z - what are the chance that Nissan will build a car that will out handle a Honda? (as claimed)
RX8 - remember the reliability surrounding rotory engine on the RX7 and all the crying? is the risk worth it?
