OK, Big news. Two things: Scotch tape works AND you can install this part without de-installing any part of the console. That is, you can place the spring inside the separator arm, tape the spring tightly so that it is tucked into the "closed" or "down" position, install the taped arm, and remove the Scotch tape later. With it taped, it's easier to maneuver the separator into place. So in my limited experience - I didn't have to install the arm from the back which takes about an hour out of the operation.

The best way to explain how to do that is like this - think of the separator arm as having two small ears. What you need to do is fit those ears on the arm into the holes in the console. There is some flexibility in the arm and some in the receiving groove - enough to do this. Start by tucking one ear on the arm into the groove. So you are positioning the arm in there crookedly and it isn't snug fit but this approach keeps you from shearing the ears off and it takes advantage of the plasticity (a word I have been trying to use all day). No at the same time, with your other hand, use a knife blade to shoe-horn the other ear in. I used a swiss army knife blade. It's a breeze and nothing broke in my 2004 machine.

Thanks guys. This helped me solve the same problem. It wasn't as tricky as I anticipated. I just forced the piece in and then worked with a small flat head screw driver to force the spring behind the plastic (sort of pushing it diagonally). It was a bit scary because the plastic fit in with a lot of force, I thought I'd break it. Same with the spring, I just held it with my finger (no tape needed) while I used the flat head.

I won't have attempted this without the instructions
and pictures.

Does anyone have an idea where I could obtain the little catcher clip the cup holder separator clicks in to in the down position? My separator seems to work just fine but the catcher clip is missing so it will not stay in the stowed position.

Awesome!! I got the replacement part and my separator now behaves itself! According to the dealership parts guy I got the last one in the US and he had to bring it up from Cali. Not sure how true that was but I am just gald to have gotten it fixed.
