I just got quoted $460 at the dealer to pull the hub off and fix the stuff, replace bearing etc etc

thinking about trying to chase the thread with this instead:

That looks like a good deal on the thread chaser. But I'm not sure about the "Capacity: 1-1/4" to 5" OD" part. Sounds like it is designed to work with LARGE bolts. If your car is a Honda, most likely the thread size for the studs is M12x1.50, so you can check if the chaser would work for that size. Good luck. Please keep us posted whether you buy one or not -- just in case one of us Vintagers have need of a chaser (no, not that kind of chaser) in the future.

I ended up not being able to find that piece at harbour freight so I bought a tap and die set that has the correct M12 / 1.5 die

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Disp...temnumber=41452

This is a big kit and was $70 but as my thread problem seemed to be at the front of the stud I wanted these split style dies.

I tested the die on a spare stuff I got with a spacer kit to check it was the correct pitch etc and it seemed good

I put the die on loose with lots of WD40 and wound it on making sure it was straight. Once it was on I put pressure on it to close it up and turned it off slowly.

The kit to turn it would not fit very well in between the studs so I used a pair of mole grips to close the die up when I turned it off.

There were a few metal shavings and whatever and it worked great - the lug went straight back on!

$460+ was the dealer quote for changing the studs on that side including they the bearing etc etc so I saved myself $390 and I have a nice big tap and die set which I'm sure will come in handy in the future
