it might be best if we leave some of those station wagon memories were they belong, enshrined in the memories of my teens years.

it does bring back a lot of memories of my Dad however.
he had a franken-wagon that he put back together out of two and used to run in and out of Boston to work.
He died shortly after I got my license so I sort of got the car for a little while.
One day a guy pulled up and asked if it was for sale. Even though it really wasn't advertised as such I responded that it was.
How much? seventy five. How much? I thought about it for a moment and responded, One Seventy five.
Nowadays we'd have taken it to the junkyard since you can't sell cars as is.

Driving that car flat out on rt 495 is another one of those things that would go on the list of reasons I really shouldn't still be here today.
I don't really know how fast I was going, the speedo was bouncing between 80 a 125.
Three staties who came down the ramp and blew by me.
Fortunately they had bigger fish to fry and they continued on their way and I on mine.
It did however convince me maybe I should slow down. Took my sphincter about an hour to relax.

Yes, second from right. Dad (2007) and Mom (2000) died. From left is Lee, Nancy, me and Frank. I am in touch with Nancy, often, and will see her in a week in Colorado, but not at all with Lee and occasionally with Frank.

Growing up on a farm, our "station wagon" had to be practical, and since money was very tight, one like this (1941 Ford pick-up) was what I learned to drive in, and in fact, my dad kept until after I went to college: (Wish I still had it!)

As a kid, my friends and neighbors all had one form of wagon or another. One of my worst teenage nights was spent in the back of a wagon with serious alcohol sickness. But a pretty good night was spent in the back of a similar wagon with a lady I was dating in my 20s. My family had two kids spaced 11 years apart. So we never owned such a thing. As a teenager, I had many great experiences in Volvo 1800 and 144 wagons. Ask me about the Volvo wagon that towed an Elva Courrier from Boston to Watkin's Glenn and back.

Did you have an 1800ES wagon? There were very few produced, I believe somewhere around 6K units. The coupe had been around since 1960's, but the ES was a one year production. It cost as much as a Corvette in 1973. I bought mine in June of 1973 and they discontinued production two weeks later. I just sold the car 7 years ago. I owned many Volvo's; 544's, 122's, 142, and 242's, but the ES was the only wagon. When I moved to Sweden, I brought my 1980 242GT for my wife to drive. I sold it in Norway in 2003 for more than I paid for it new.

Love the old photos! When I was a kid we had a 72 gran torino wagon which blew a head gasket when we were on vacation and that was the end of that one. Next we had a 73 town and country with a 440 which was a tank also had "wood" paneling on the side. I remember cousins of ours had a vista cruiser wagon which had a partially glass roof which was pretty cool.
