Run a brake pad like Carbotech 1521's and you will never have to worry about wheel stains, the ceramic matrix dust that is created slides right off the wheel with no metallic staining. It is also a great performing rotor friendly pad for street-use.

Twice a year I'll pull the wheels off the car and wash them thoroughly in the driveway. I use either meguiar's wheel barrier or armor all wheel protectant, usually whichever I can find in store or is cheaper, but a can will last you over a year if you have just one set to take care of.

With wheels clean and dry I leave wheels standing up and put a nice light even coat inside the wheel drum then lay them down facing up. Allow to dry about 15-20 minutes then repeat this again. Once the inside of the wheels are clean and dry I go over the faces of the wheels with one coat and once dry go over again with another coat.. Again, light even coats is key because any excess will run somewhere and dry with a visible streak. Any runs with the wheels facing up will run down the drum and be barely noticeable if at all.

While applying and before it dries between coats take a wet microfiber cloth and wide the sidewall of the tires if you happened to get any on it. Don't let it dry on tires otherwise you may end up with spots on the tires.

Of course when washing your car afterwards you still want run a microfiber sponge, at least on the face of the wheels, to help break up any dirt/brake dust, but overall the wheels stay much cleaner between washes as an unprotected wheel would. Dust that usually collects around the edges or spokes or lips is reduced greatly. You may never notice any dust between washes after it's protected depending on how much you drive or what brake pads you use. This just helps a lot with making it easier to clean wheels, especially if you drive in dirty/rainy conditions.

I like using Sonax full effect. You just spray it on, wait for a few minutes then rinse off.

some of the products are outdated, but the general ideas are still relevant : https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/420...well-cleaning/

just be sure that the cleaner is non-acidic - there are acidic cleaners for really stubborn jobs, but those require great care to avoid etching (or worse)
