Default Sports car on the decline

Baby boomers not buying

I noticed for the last few years at used car lots the 2 door fun car seems to be getting harder and harder to find . When I was in high school most people I knew did not want to drive a 4 door "Mom and Dads" car . We went after RX7,Preludes,Celicas,Eclipses,3000GT, plus the usual Mustang and Camaros .
Now you go to the car lot and it is a sea of 4 door generic sedan, truck,or SUV . I must have never grown up because to me 4 doors are NEVER EVER COOL!
Even the other day VW announced they would no longer bring the 2 door GTI to the US
Blandtastic people movers are winning versus the Cool 2 door fun buggy . WHat is wrong with the world???????????

Maybe part of the reason is young adults are broke, living in their parent's basement, with no job.

I'm honestly not sure how much it has to do with Baby Boomers aging.

Look around, there aren't as many affordable sports cars for sale anymore. Compared to the 80s and 90s there are considerably fewer options. Why?

In my opinion the reason for this is the cost to develop sports cars. Thanks to ever increasing government regulation for safety and emissions it costs more than ever to develop a new car, nevermind a sports car. I also think that's why we see more hot hatches and sports sedans instead of coupes. Personally I think they've gone too far. If someone wants to buy a sports car and is willing to sacrifice some safety for more lightweight, what's wrong with that? Save the safer stuff for family transportation.

Without a lot of affordable sports cars (and sporty coupes) on the market for people to buy, a lot instead turn to SUVs as a way to "break from the mold" of the boring stigma associated with sedans.

Personally I find it ridiculous that people shun hatchbacks, wagons and minivans but buy CUVs in droves. CUVs that, honestly, are really hatchbacks and wagons and in some cases basically minivans with conventional opening doors.

I always thought this was one car that looked better as a 4 door anyway.

+1. I think it's a pretty dated idea that a car having 2 doors automatically makes it cooler than one with 4 doors. A 2 door GTI and a 4 door GTI are the same car only one is less useful than the other. Apparently everyone else agreed because VW wasn't selling enough 2 door GTIs to justify keeping it around.

Sports cars were always low volume anyway.

I'd be happy with only a few great sports cars [at "regular people" prices] vs many high volume sporty cars.

I can't think of a better time for performance cars in history. So many options or there from MX5s to P1s

Maybe people that have the 2 door fun cars are keeping them. This would cause a shortage of them on the used car lots.
