Default Black Friday Shopping - Bought a "P" car

Well, we were a bit extreme with our Black Friday purchases. We waited until Sunday and bought a Porsche Boxter 2012 12K miles on it. If all goes well, we exchange title for $$ next weekend.

Here's the story. We've done all the grown up things we need to do as far as home maintenance, new roof, shingles, windows, remodeled kitchen, bath, you know the score....We have stayed quite happily for 32 years in our "starter home" and not been house poor; lived according to our means as we were taught by our parents.. Recently, Rick talked about upgrading my Jeep as the newer model has features we'd like. I told him no, I was fine, but maybe he needs to upgrade his sports car. Well, he ran with that one...He looked for a cream puff Honda, but for the few that are out there they are asking more than the cars were when they were new, and the fact is they are still at least 8 years old. So he found this Porsche.

Rick will be 65 in May. He thought of retiring, but realizes he really doesn't have enough hobbies, to fill his day. Since we have no pensions, it's better for him to wait until 66 to get full SS benefit. There are many days I think I want to be retired, but the truth is we'd have to spend crazy money for health insurance every month for four years. If we are going to spend money, we'd rather it be on something fun, not health insurance, so I will keep working. Rick also plans to continue working even past 66, if possible, maybe he'll be able to cut his hours or work part time. I plan on working full time for about 2 1/2 years, we will review the situation as we go along.

The question being asked is will we sell the S? Nope, not yet. We are also keeping the Subaru at least for this winter, or until we see how all this "shakes out." This may be the most impulsive thing we have ever done, but it can be "un-done" if we find the whole Porsche ownership too expensive. I gave the Porsche a quick test drive today. I'm actually more comfortable in it height wise, vs the S. It has plenty of power, handles nicely, but obviously it's a very different car than the S.

Here are the pics..you knew they were coming....

I will join Sue in saying Wow, Lainey. So glad you are keeping the S. There are lots of Porsches around, the S really is special. I do hope you gets lots of fun from the Porsche, it looks beautiful.

Thanks, all.

Gene, I'm not sure the Porsche people are ready for me.

We have now joined a group of five NE S2000 owners who bought a Porsche but kept their S2000.

Catherine, you are right, the S is special. We've had so much fun with it, I'm just not ready to part with it. The Porsche may become our "road trip" car as it does have more space and more creature comforts. We'll see.

Nice! Looks to be in great shape. Think that you'll enjoy the handling and responsiveness of that Boxster. Photos of engine compartment and interior to come?

Oh, by the way... aren't Porsche convertibles "chick magnets?" That's what a friend told me. He's saving up for a 997-GT3. He must be after big game.

Congrats Lainey/Rick, it looks nice. Sounds like you two are going to need a bigger driveway
If this is going to be Rick's upgraded sports car it must mean the S is all yours.

Very nice, congrats. Good that you got a 2012 as the earlier models had a real issue with the main bearing. They did do a recall on it but those that experienced failure before hand were faced with getting a new engine. The fix cost 3K+ if you realized you had the model year that had the defective bearing. I think it was 05-09 but not positive. Anyway, gorgeous ride and Boxsters handle well with decent power.
