hmm... I'm using 5w-30...

anyone tell me what the difference is?

Should I switch to 5w-40?

Doesn't it mean it's thicker when heated up? or is it that the 40 is thicker when cold?

I have a supply of 0-40 mobil left so that's what it'll get at the first service unless I use it before then, if I have to get oil I'm gonna give the edge t/diesel stuff a try, it's been well recommended and I can get it at a discount from work.

Should I let them change the oil at the first service if I haven't reached the correct mileage by then?. I've done 3.2k but might manage 5k by then.

Other way around.
Small number is viscosity when cold.
A 0W is thinner than a 10W at a given ambient temperature for example.

The upper number is viscosity at high temperature, and the reverse is true.
So a 50 will still be still thicker than a 30 at the high temp end.

Too thin and I guess it gets burned up in a 'lose' engine.
So if you expect REALLy high temps, go for a 40/50.
If you live in the arctic, go for a 0W-xx
I'm sure a 15W-xx would be fine in our moderate winters.
Its a little thicker when cold, sure, so may need a bit more cranking

I don't really know. Between services my car seems to synthesise its own oil.

I have a completely unused tub of 5W40 FWIW.

Motul 300V Power 10w40 at the moment. Comes out almost as clean as it went in, and smells really good too. Never used anything better...

Sunoco 10w - 60 fully syn simply because I tend to drive it like I stole it.

Interesting. So it's better for me to use a xx/40 on track?

Oil is supposed to get dirty, it means the dirt is going into the oil and not staying in the engine. Motul 300V is a race oil where engine cleanliness isn't the top of it's priorities, obviously a nice smelling oil is important though.

Honda UK recommend a 5W-40 C3 oil.
