Default Want to try Autocross - how do I get started

Hi guys/gals, trying to plan for getting into autocross. Having no prior experience, my expectation is to learn to drive the car at near-limit/limit in safe driving conditions and come out a better driver hopefully. I'm not at all interested in being competitive - no time/money for that - so just fun, experience, meet friends is what I'm after.

Could you folks with leads on this topic help point me in the right direction? Should I do a driving school first? FYI, I've 20yrs driving exp. with mostly sporty rwd man trans cars so I'm not a terrible driver, just want gain adv. driving skills. Any advice welcome. Thx.

Rick

Hi Rick, Where are you located? It's not necessary to do a driving school first (although it's still good to take one as you do learn a lot), just sign up for an event and show up. The primary thing is to make sure you have tread on your tires, your brakes are in good condition and your battery is tied down properly. At the autox events there will be a lot of experienced drivers that can give you pointers. Two local clubs are UBCSCC and VCMC.

Have fun,

Alex

Alex is right that no prior performance driving school is needed. I had an AP2 and did autox with VCMC. From my own experience of the sport (I never intended nor attempted to really compete as well, similar to how you described yourself), I recommend you to go first the Velocity I course with VCMC to start. It gives the most seat time for the money and gives very very good instructions as entry point to the sport!

There are several S2KI forum members here (in Van area) autox with both UBC club and VCMC. I know them outside of this forum too... can't remember their exact screen names now. You can PM me and I can get you connected with those good folks.

Cheers!!

Thanks alSpeed2k and i_s2k. I live in Vancouver, and I will definitely follow your suggestions and join those club autocross events. Just did a Velocity lookup and looks like the season's done for this year as far as Velocity I (or II) course, but that's cool because it gives me time to get my new tire/wheel set that I could then use for these events/courses come 2017.

See you guys in person in 2017!

Hey Rick,

I'm interested in doing it next year as well. Maybe we can start together! I've never auto-crossed ever.

PM me your info!

I tried it for the first time without any experience. Did the first run with stability control on then the next 3 without it. Its a blast and everyone should try it.

All you need is a battery that is safely tied down, functional brakes, some tire tread, and uncracked windshield glass.
The rest is seat time, leaving the ego at home, be open to advice, and having fun.

i don't own an s2k but i codrive a couple at autocross.

Thanks guys for your inputs!! Really appreciate your interest in helping out.

I'm out of town 22-25 of Sept so I'm bummed that I won't be able to participate on the UBCSCC AutoX 101 which looks like the puurfect way to get going with this. Darn! I hope there's something like that at the beg of next year. Looking at the cal, April is Velocity school and May is AutoX 101. Gonna make sure to keep my eyes open for the firm dates as they get posted.

The first Velocity school of the year is this weekend, and there are still a handful of spots left. Weather is supposed to be great on Saturday too! You can register here: https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...re-vcmc-107934
