Default 2017 Tire Talk

Hi All,

My AP1 will be getting some new tires this spring & I know about the existing options (PSS/S04 for a nice high performance street tire that will excel in rain & last a long(er) while, RE71R for fastest lap times, etc), but what is new for 2017?

Continental is replacing the DW with the HyperContact Sport.

PSS is being replaced in 19/20" sizes, but nothing for S2000 sizing, yet.

Hankook rolling out the RS4 (as discussed elsewhere)

FIrehawk Indy 500 is new-ish.

Am I missing anything else?

FI500s are really just a bridgestone with firestone stamped on the side right? an RE ### replacement?

RS4 i didn't know about

PSS replacement may not ever come in 17". they stop at 245/40/17 already.

245/40/17 is all I want, FI500 are re-labeled Bridgestones AFAIK, yes.

Still the best that we have tested for wet and dry is the Super Sport and number two is the S04. A lot of the other tires mentioned will be very good on the track in the dry and not very good at all in the wet and little tread life. The Hankook and the Toyo would be what we classify is an extreme Performance tire for track and street. The Michelin 4S when it comes out I am sure will be good but we do not have any dates at this time.
If I can help let me know.

Check out the Maxxis VR-1

It's a better "RS3" that's cheaper and has a better tread pattern for wet conditions. Some report that it lasts longer too.
It's not as grippy as the RE-71R and not exactly an "all weather" tire, but it has it's place.

I replaced my wonderful three summer-old Bridgestone RE-11A tires with Bridgestone S-04 tires last October when the RE-11A tires got squirrely in heavy rain. A drop from Extreme to Max performance but so far I can't detect any downgrade.

17" wheels have many more tire options.

S04 is my choice for spring replacements, after much research. But I'm eager to hear about what might be coming out.

My car is 3 season dd, so I need a tire that lasts, and is good in rain. So max performance category. It was down to MPSS or S04. The S04 won out since all out traction is not as important to me as steering feel, and the S04 is reported to have stiffer sidewalls and slightly better steering feel.

But both those tires are getting old, and newer technology will likely soon replace them. I don't want to buy tires only to have an impressive newcomer to come out and eclipse them.
