Default Let's Talk Double Stagger

All right, plan on updating my wheels and tires with the V8 going into the car this week. I originally considered running 18's front and rear since I'll be going with Work Meister S1Rs. However, I just realized they also come in 17's. What would the con's be for running a 17 up front and an 18 in the rear?

The Pros for running a 17 in front:
Cheaper
Can find tires with the appropriate tread width (8.5-9") AND overall diameter close to/matching stock (ZII Star Specs, AD08R, RE-71R)

I'll be running an 18x11 +65 in the back for sure.

I'm on Fortune Auto coils right now but will be upgrading these in the future as well.

What are the cons of running a double stagger?

No draw backs besides it looking funny with a sidewall twice as thick (assuming you are maintaining the outer diameter front and rear the same)

You can run a 275/40/17 in the rear on stock fenders... or a 315/35/17 in the rear if you are ok with over fenders. The benefit is of course a lot less money every time you replace those rear tires 2x a year form torqueing them to death with that v8 The fronts are least of your financial concerns, they will last multiple times longer.

Work Meisters are heavy. really heavy compared to most forged wheels. double staggered is totally doable. can look good in RPF1s. Seconding junky's twice as tall side wall comment. our NSX runs 17x8+39 and 18x10+39, we threw 215s up front 265 in the back.

if you do it, i'd recommend at least an 8" wide wheel up front with ever so slightly stretched tire for the slight increase in weight on the front.

I went double-stagger on the FD in order to keep smaller/lighter/cheaper 17s up front with desired 245 front and 275 width street tires. For me, I hate the look of larger-diameter wheels (which IMO are more and more a thing because cars get ever-huger) particularly at the front of small sports cars. But another implication is that running popular 17" and 18" sizes, you might end up with larger-diameter rear tires than fronts, which will affect brake bias (moves it forward). However this aspect also minimizes and can eliminate the "thick-sidewall-front/short-sidewall-rears" look.

The brake bias issue isn't a big deal, as it's in the more "stable" direction, and in my experience with the S2000 and the FD doesn't really affect braking performance at the track, within reason. I did notice the excessive front bias when I happened to run 23.2" 205/45-16 fronts with 24.9" 225/50-16 rears on the S2k at the track once (not my size choice, tires were given to me brand new). But in the more reasonable range of, say, 24.7" 245/40-17 fronts with 25.6" 275/35-18 rears, should not be an issue for 99.9% of users...

FD on 17x8.5 +40 & 18x9.5 +45 with 245/40-17 & 275/35-18 tires:

The plan is 9" wide in front and 11" wide in the rear. I'd love a forged wheel, but don't know who makes one in an 18x11, especially with the offset I need.
