S2000s at Buttonwillow Raceway

This past weekend, February 25th and 26th, over 20 S2000s took to the challenging 3-mile course at Southern California’s Buttonwillow Raceway. Saturday’s event was held on configuration #25 also known as the “Viper” configuration due to it’s favoring of high horsepower machines. Regardless, due to it’s superior handling, the S2000s can maintain tremendous momentum through the slower portions allowing us to exceed 100 mph at five different locations on this high speed layout. Sunday’s event featured configuration #13, which is probably the best layout for an S2000 in Southern California. The ebb and flow of #13 perfectly compliments the characteristics of the S2000, and cars with double the horsepower weren’t able to keep up with the superior handling of our S2k. 

There was a huge variety of S2000s in attendance from RSXLNT’s bone stock ‘05, to slightly modified cars on race tires like Raymund’s ‘01, a few fully track prepped but still street legal S2ks like HunterEZ’s ‘03, and even krazik’s lightning fast, fully stripped ’00 Honda Cup race car riding on Dunlop racing slicks. S2ki founder cthree was tearing up the track in his NFR ’01 on brand new r-compounds mounted on Volk 17’s, 4.77 gears, and Ohlins coilovers Speed demon Maxrev was also in attendance in his very well prepped ’04 street car, and Saturday came within two seconds of krazik’s screamer.

There was a large selection of other cars in attendance as well with many Porsches, ‘Vettes, Vipers, Radicals, Evos, and other fast cars. The S2000s did themselves proud posting some of the fastest lap times each day. Many Corvettes, Carreras and Evos fell to our lesser-powered but more nimble little car.

Although this event didn’t feature an S2000 specific class in Sunday’s “time attack” several S2ki members (pantyraider, point-a-b-c, krazik) still were able to take home trophies, often beating much “faster” cars. Not only is the S2000 a superior car on the racetrack, but also many of the members of S2ki are exceptional drivers who really know how to get the most out of their car. This combination puts our S2ki members atop racing podiums from coast to coast on a regular basis.

S2ki congratulates all the participants of the event whether they trophied or not. The S2000 is a wonderful track car, but only a very few will ever be given the opportunity to do what they do best. We salute the owners who did what it took to get themselves and their S2000s to the racetrack for this one-of-a-kind experience.
