It’s My Car, My Money, and My Time – by JayKnight

I know we have all seen it, heard it, or even said it ourself, what am I talking about? Good question. I will get to that in a second, but first let me say this. Everyone on the planet is different, that is what makes us who we are, or what we strive to become. So with that being said, why is there so much hate among car forums? I am sure it started way back in the 50′ or 60′s when an old man in a FORD told another old man in a CHEVY that he needs a 4 barrel carb instead of a 2.

We all here on S2KI have one thing in common, we all love our S2000. Some more than others, and some just own theirs to boost an ego, or are having a mid life crisis. Needless to say, we all have that going for us. Now this brings me to my point….

Why is it that when somebody spends so much time, effort, and money to make a car a reality of a vision? Just to have it looked on as a POS or a disgrace to the automobile. For example…Why is the header I have so inferior to the one you have? Why do I need to get those ROTAS wheels and not the Enkies I have. What if I like NEON under my car? So what if I am not boosted. Do any of these things make me less of a person? What if a persons budget will not afford them the finer things in life? Do you feel it makes you a better person, because you can afford all the extras?

These are the continuous remarks and complaints we all read and hear about, no matter where we are. It can be online, at a meet, or even worse face-to-face. This is the cookie cutter mentality that is making it hard for people to enjoy the hobby of modifying a car to fit THEIR dream and vision. There has been and always will be people that like and dislike the way a person builds their car, but to degrade that person because they built something not up to your standards (using this part instead of that one), well that is just not right, and more than anything…RUDE!!!

Here is how I see it…If you want me to put something on my car so bad, give me the money and I will do it. I am not one to be a follower of current trends or fads, never have been and never will be. I like to do thing my way, and hopefully get some positive reward, even if it is a simple “Hey that looks great!” or “Nice Car!” Just that is reward enough for me.

I know not everyone on here is guilty of doing this, and I also know that many of us (as a people) are. We all have an opinion, and it is a right to have one. Was Picasso liked by all his peers? Of course not, but look at how famous he became during his time.

NOTE: S2KI welcomes the opinions of its members on the S2000 and on all topics related to the S. Should you feel the creative urge to pen a few words then by all means do so and PM Energetic, Aashish2 or Onehots2k OR send us links to what you would like us to write about and we will feature you (or your community) on the S2KI Home Page.

“Do any of these things make me less of a person?”

Ummm…you shouldn’t consider a criticism of your car a criticism of yourself. I’ve made plenty of friends in the S2ki community that have cars I dislike – that doesn’t mean I dislike them as people.

Also, if someone posts up pictures of their car on the interwebz, they should be prepared to get a bit of criticism – deserved or not.

I think the great part of internet forums is that people can express their opinions freely under a thin veil of anonymity. The part I don’t like is when people get all huffy when they hear something they don’t like. People criticize my car all the time. I don’t get pissy about it because I like it.

Owning an S2000 is different for different people… There are those who only use the car as a track toy and will find offense to anything added to it that is not track usable or intended for it. Then you have the people who show, this is the group that is big on JDM parts and going to the extreme in modification… Then there are the individuals just happy to have a nice looking convertable and enjoy it as such… You need to find what catagory you fall under and be proud of it, but not take offense to suggestions by some of the more experienced owners here… They are only aiding in there help and knowledge even though it may not be construed as such…

It’s human nature to think of yourself as better then everyone else, everyone does it, so don’t be surprised when some chode thinks his car is better then yours or his girlfriend is better looking, if it really bothers you, the only thing you can do to not perpetuate this mentality is to not have children.

After reading this I am reminded of chips and shoulders.
I also owned an S2K but didn’t have your problems.

I agree with all the remarks posted here.
I am not one of these people that get offended.
I am just speaking from a general point of view from
everything I have read or heard on other forums, or
    conversations.

I have been modding cars since I was about 21, I am
38 now. So I have seen the ups and downs of the whole
game. I guess you could say I am immune to it.

I have no chips on my shoulders, and no problems at
all. I guess I just had to vent about the way I have seen
things played out through the years. And how one group
of people think that they are better than the other. I am not
pointing any fingers at anyone at all. But we all know the car
    drama is out there.

Id have to say I agree with JayKnight. Some people like to be unique…As a matter of fact, I feel that applies to anyone with an s2k. Owning an s2k is going to be an attention grabber, but by no means is one persons better than the other( old saying “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” applies to this one )….Its a bummer that some people who own the s2k feel they have to have a better one than others….So far, i havent ran into that problem. Most s2k owners I have driven by at least throw up a “peace” sign while driving by.. As of today, I havent had any s2ks’s roll up and rev on me….So thats good…But keep it real guys, some have more than others, but in my eyes, its all good.. Just be happy you drive an S and not some 95 Ford Escort ( if you do drive that car im sorry, that thing was a POS in my life haha) Cheers mates!!!

Just to make it clear. This has noting to do with S2000 in general.
I see this happening all over the web. I see it in the Prelude forums,
Import Atlanta, Street Cars Dot Net, and just about any other site I have visited.

I know that there are much better cars than the S2000. But I just get tired of
trying to sift through all the BS to get a question answered or help someone else with a question they might have. Just gets frustrating.

There will always be a stigma attached to the auto world. Personally I looked at the s2000 and it was almost looking at a beautiful woman. The curves the lines the headlights. The heart hiding under the hood. A masterpiece… But I love my cars as if they are children. If you mod a car expect that some will not have the same view. But that’s what makes people human. I say embrace all feed back and learn from it whether it be positive or negative… But just don’t buy a prius

Just because you have a better car then someone doesn’t mean you have to be a douche about it. Sometimes when I drive my AP2 around and I see a crappy civic or accord with loud ass muffler, I don’t provoke him! I don’t rev my engine like a cocky fag! I don’t even laugh at him or even say anything negative to him. Even if i despised it with my life, I wouldn’t put him or the car down. And don’t say i’m a pussy for it. Its CALLED RESPECT! People have to understand that not everyone has the money or even the same taste. I may hate half the cars out there, but I wont be douche about unless if the owner is being a douche himself. But seriously, If you act like a douche bag I won’t hold back. But overall, I respect all types of styles, just don’t push it on me or even think that yours is better than others.
BTW I totally agree with this Topic you wrote. =)

First of all …..it is unlikely that some one will walk up to your car and say it is ugly for no reason. Its the people that build the S in hopes of a following…If you build your car based on your preferences and enjoy it you will almost never be criticized. If you build your car and constantly put pics up on forms…attend shows as much as possible, then criticism is almost mandatory…There will always be opinionated people who think this car should look a certain way…weather it be kept stock, full bodykit, oem Liped, slammed, or mods in moderation.

The internet does not count in my opinion. Poeple hide behind the internet so they can say foul things with no consequence. The real life scenario for criticism should be constructive. A rational person would not be rude if they didnt like your car. They wont lie and tell you they love it. They would understand where your coming from. might let you know they would of chose other wise but still give you the thumbs up for the hard work….

People are so lazy now a days…it just easier to leave a horrible comment on line then it is in person.. because in person the lazy guy doesnt want confrontation…

and the answer to that is not stop the violence while people can say what ever they feel…..it is stop being lazy and learn to be curtious to everyone as you would want to be treated.

    Peace and Love!!
