Speechless: My first 250 miles in an S2000

Original write-up by Akuma

Well … I’m finally home now. Four and half hours of (almost non-stop) driving, I am officially in love with a car. Again. I have had my share of cars, but nothing, I repeat, nothing, came close to how I felt today, driving home. After searching for a car for myself since I moved to Dallas a couple of months ago, I talked myself in, and out, of buying an S2000. I was swayed by a variety of things, my previous car (an Evo VIII), a Golf R32, and a few more than I have forgotten about now. But for some reason, I kept getting drawn to the S2000, over and over again. I am sure some of you are smiling and nodding already, because you know exactly what I am talking about. Well, for me, an S2000 has always been a “beautiful, classic, sports car”.

Sure, I’ve had a five minute drive here and there in a friends car, but I now strongly believe that to experience an S2000 properly, a road trip, (or at least a decent hour of driving ) is necessary.

I never really expected this to be honest. I thought my WRX was awesome, and then, when I got an Evo, again, my excitement level lifted. But in the back of my mind, I knew that it wasn’t all me. Two different computers working in harmony, driving everything, keeping me straight, tricky LSDs, active yaw this, all wheel drive that. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but the S2000 ….

It’s hard to describe. It feels like a samurai sword, pushing it’s way down the blacktop with surgical precision. Begging you to push it harder, to point it at the next corner. Out of all the cars I have owned, this car has to be, the most pure, raw, driver focused sports car I have ever owned. Maybe I am still buzzing from the drive, but I find it hard to believe (right now) that anything else can top it for me at the moment.

Once I got home (tired, dying to have a shower, a drink, and something to eat), I couldn’t help but go outside, and stare at it in my garage. This is really mine?

Sleep will be hard to manage tonight. I have already bought a hardtop for it BEFORE I picked up the car, and I have never done that before, for any car I have owned.

I was going to end this post by apologizing for the emotionally charged lines above, but I don’t think I need to apologize for being really, really happy.

I understand the feeling at first i was totally against buying my 05 s2000 but a friend of mine knew what kind of car i wanted and recommended it. At first i was like no way after about 2 months of him badgering me, he said “just test drive one” so i did best advice anyone has ever given me.
My s2000 is a part of my family and always will be

Great to hear from a fellow S2000 owner! I know the feeling when you enter the garage and spend minutes looking at your baby and wondering if it’s really yours. It happens to me before every drive whether it’s going out for school, getting groceries, or even on a lovely Sunday drive.. Just, everyday. The passion and excitement that the S2000 evokes within us is incredible. I had a wonderful time reading your post, take care!

You might not realize it now, but every day is going to feel like the first day you bought it. ;)

I just had the same exact experience. I recently sold my 2004 STI and bought a 2003 s2000. I needed to drive it home from Boston to Long Island. The trip took about 5 hours and on the way home i hit some sunshine and some rain, some long highway straits, and some s turns. I was so thrilled with the performance and I’m very happy with my purchase and glad to be a part of the club.

Thanks for giving me this empty feeling as I sit at work while my s2k is resting at home. You’ve managed to ruin my day, but you’ve given me a reason to leave early to enjoy my evening ;-)

I’m so glad that you shared your experience. Your words took me right back to my first hour of ownership – thanks for that. What an experience we all share!

Awesome read man. i just drove back to Memphis after an awesome weekend at Import Alliance in Nashville. It was about a 3 hour drive home with me, my buddy with a Z, and my friend with the only ls2 swapped STI in the world. They were speeding like crazy and since i swapped my car to 4.44′s my car was spinning at around 5400 rpm to keep pace. Needless to say i felt bad for my baby especially after giving it hell all weekend, but guess what when i got home it sat in my garage purring for more. This car absolutely amazes me and I know exactly the feeling your talking about dude. It’s the feeling that causes you to feel unsatisfied when driving other sports cars. I can be having a bad day at work or be in a bad mood and driving my car can make my day turn full circle. Anyway welcome to the addiction lol

nice feeling. i have the same, and still remain, feeling every morning. I look forward driving my car everyday, and will find every excuse to take it for a drive; that is probably why i am at 150K.

I have become accustomed to my S after 1 year of ownership. now I have issues like is my garage floor good enough for the S? how come there isnt enough light in here to let the paint shine…….And the ever looming How do I get this thing to go with me to the grave. Congrats and welcome to the family

Nice post, welcome to the S world buddy:) !!! When I bought mine S2K (2005 Imola Orange AP1) and saw it for the first time in person I was speechless… I’ve never tested or tried one before but it took me a whole year of studying all specs and forums to choose the right car and I know now that S2000 was the right decision… This car kicks ass man – be ready for more perfect days :)

I can sympathize totally. I got a 5 minute test drive in one and that was enough to make me want it, but when i flew from my home in Florida to pick up my MY03 in West Virginia, the ten hour drive home was really what made me fall in love with it.

Love the post and the obvious enthusiasm you have for the car. I did a similar thing – had never driven an S2K before I bought one and flew 480 miles to pick it up. The 8 hour drive home left me in no doubt I had done the right thing swapping a Lotus Elise for an S2K. Very special day. Enjoy the car and drive safe.

I feel like that everytime I drive mine too. I am eager to go to work, if only because I get to drive my S2k there and back.

There’s a particular greater-than-90 degrees right-hand turn that takes me from one busy connecting road to the main two-lane road I use to get to work. If I see cars at the light for this turn I try to let my engine slow me gradually, gradually as I approach so that I might get a shot at nipping the apex and letting my car sing and shake her hips a little on that sublime curve. The rest of the trip is fairly mundane, but—knock on wood—there are seldom any coppers on that long winding stretch and I can zip 10- or 15-miles above the speed limit in gratuitous bursts as I get over-enthusiastic with the right pedal.

    :) :) :)
