Video of the Week: The Dragon Experience

This week’s video features an in-car view of the infamous Dragon. As you can tell from the video both the driver and passenger seem to be enjoying the drive. Pay close heed to what the passenger is saying – at one point he feels like the S2000 is floating on air as it rides the Dragon. Do you agree with him or not?

    Apparently the speed limit is 30mph. That’s much too slow though.

    Nice driving, what the deal with all the tire noise, low pressure or cheap tires, pso2 or reo 50s to soft to make all that noise.

    Tires are Bridgestone RE-050A Pole Positions (on correct pressure)… they make noise if you push them hard enough. The feedback is helpful if you want to go fast!

    RESPECT THE DOUBLE YELLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Late, too sharp ‘turn ins’ caused most of the squealing.

    Looks like fun though.

    Great video. Did you heel and toe on your downshifts? You make it look so easy. And if you were, did you teach yourself or go somewhere to learn? I have a Civic Si and can rev-match, but heel and toe is real tough. I’m not sure if it’s the pedal positioning or that I wear a size 8.5.

    hah it probably the 8.5 shoe size. I can say heal tow is very easy with a size 12… However, i hardly fit in my s2k. Awesome video can’t wait to go here !!

    @gerry – yep it’s lots of fun. don’t know about “too sharp” turn ins… that would put me off the road! remember there’s only about 12″-18″ of space on either side of the car. yellow line is strictly off limits!!!

    @Chris – heel toe was self-taught. best advice I can give you is to start doing it every day while driving around casually. after a few months/years of that you’ll improve dramatically. i still do it nearly every opportunity. also size 10.5 shoe & stock pedals, FYI. cock your foot sideways (heel below the gas pedal, toes pointing somewhere like 10 o’clock) and that might help, or get aftermarket pedals to bring it closer together. practice, practice, practice!

    Nice vid! What camera mount are you using?

    I agree with your advice on heel-toe, I’m self taught too and that’s how I did it. Constant practice is the key to getting good at anything. Oddly enough I too have stock pedals and a size 10.5 shoe, ha!

    maybe 10.5′s are just the magic combo! LOL

    camera mount is Modifry’s mount that goes under the windscreen between the headrests. I’m also using a 0.7x wide angle lens on my videocamera to get the shot wide enough to frame the windshield

    I was trailing this car and allow me to say that his driving is spot on. The noise is because we are going so damn fast. The FCPD group is a little more spirited than most and I didn’t see one car loose control or touch yellow. Can’t wait to do it again in April.

    First thing they teach at HP driver ed is keeping your head up so you look towards the next turn. Early on most drivers tend to look over the nose of the car.

    This leads you to postion the car better for entry into a turn at the most gradual radius. ( it is harder on roads you don’t have memorized). Then you turn in at a better spot and don’t have to suddenly ad steering input in the middle of the turn. Hard to describe well, but try looking up.

    Nice shifting. I have the H&T down pretty well on my old 911 ( after 9 years/40k miles) but having a slow time with my s2k ( 3K miles)

    @gerry i don’t see where habitforming holding his head up would have made it any more grand. i got to ride shotgun the whole weekend and had so much fun witnessing some incredible driving that i didn’t even think of driving myself. billman and habitforming are the 2 fastest drivers on the dragon, they go, then they wait for the pack, they go, then wait for the pack-it was a ride to behold. we rocked the mountain roads the whole way in, were the last car to leave on the poker run and second one to finish, got to rock fcpd, spent a day driving in the rain at speeds i never would have considered feasible, and got a flat out no traffic run down on the way out of town-and we never crossed the yellow line.

    spawny… why so many trolls? how would you prefer I do it, just not make it around some of the turns?

    For the record, I’ve trained on HPDE’s and have more than a basic understanding of how to drive. Billman250 will vouch for me…

    It was just painful to watch man, it’s not good technique. I would prefer it if you kept your hands apart from each other. I found a good article on hand work for you.

    I don’t follow… based on your article and watching the first few minutes of the video, it seems to me I’m using a combination of the pull technique and direct driving, both of which are the preferred methods. More often than not, my hands are at 9-3, even after a pull. Many times when my hands are close together, it’s because I am setting one hand up for the upcoming turn while the other hand is completing the existing turn.

    What would you say I am doing? Also, where is your experience from?

    I’ll never say I know everything, and admittedly the vast majority of my technique is self-taught. However, in the last 4 years of multiple trips down to the Dragon, my hand-work has never seemed a short coming or caused me any problems. The road is very unlike a race track, with minute changes in direction constantly, along with repetitive sharp turns. To me, the situation requires a lot of shuffling. Not to say I’m perfect, but I have a hard time seeing where much improvement could be made.

    Ok, kinda figured judging from the mount position, but just had to double check.

    Spawny, dude, we get what your saying, but maybe just change your verbiage a bit? You may not realize it, but your statements are decidedly inflammatory and those are painful to read. Please try to be a little more considerate of others. Otherwise maybe you should adjust fire to one of the other many s2000 forums on the internet? We’re a friendly group here.

    SkyG – I don’t believe that S2ki “condones” this activity. But, it’s an inevitable part of car culture, especially considering how perfectly the car & road match up. They are simply sharing a bit of the experience for others to witness.

    And there is no “racing” to it. Hard to race on a one-lane road anyway. It is merely spirited driving for the benefit of personal enjoyment. Egos need to stay at home and well away from this road.

    Too bad that user have removed the video. The driver’s steering is too slow to match up the car running speed. In other words, I would say he’s not holding the wheel probably, the car will easily lose control when hitting a bump, pot hole, water…or whatever.

    Hold the steering wheel, grip the wheel with at least one hand.

    drifting is another story.
