Video of the week: Raising Green Hell in an S2000

The corkscrew, Toe of the boot, and the Tail of the Dragon are what we’d bring up in conversation when discussing driving experiences here in the US of A. Our cousins across the pond though, have access to something we’d give our right arm, leg and eye for – the Nordschleife (northern loop) at the Nurburgring or the Green Hell as it is also called. Our member Joesnow of the UK S2000 Community, got to drive the Nordschliefe recently and has shared this video of his fastest lap. He went around the ring in around 10 minutes. Per Wikipedia, the lap record for the production S2000 is 8:39 in the hands of a professional. By that standard I think it is fair to conclude that Joesnow’s achievement is worth applauding. So without further ado, click below to watch Joesnow cavort around the Karussell.

Before you watch the video though, crank up the volume and pay close attention to Joesnow’s smooth steering wheel inputs, down-shifting and braking before the corner and gradually stepping on the gas upon going past the apex.

He would do so much better if he just shifted at redline and stayed in the powerband through the corners. He is pretty smooth with steering though.

great steady drive , I used to have an S2000 (TinTop) and I completed a lap here in august in a VW golf TDI faster than this guy !

I think faster or slower depends on several factors. The track condition, temperatures, tires, driver experience with the track etc.

Considering this appears to be the first time for Joesnow, I think he did a stellar job. His driving was focused and smooth and a lap time of ~10 minutes for a newbie on the Nurburgring with no instruction, is excellent.

Speed comes from being smooth and he definitely has a smooth driving technique.

    Cheers for the comments chaps.

This was my first lap in the dry, 6th overall, after starting on a sodden track in the rain, so I was unfamiliar with which turns could be taken flat. Off line was still rather greasy!

Being on the front page is great, but I am aware that there are loads of ‘Ring veterans within the UK and Europe boards. I’ll definitely be returning next year for some more laps; its quite a place!

I’m unsure why this video got a spotlight? Many s2ki members have posted vids of their s2000 nurburg laps. I posted one of myself doing 8 min 54 in a standard s2000, so not sure what makes this 10 min lap worthy of the front page?

@Paul….if you want a video posted, then send one of us (energetic, onehots2k or me) a link via PM. :)

It just so happened that we discovered this video and thread which is why it got posted. If you are better and or faster, good for you. The story will be published this weekend as well.

This 10 minute lap was posted to the front page for the following reasons:
    a) The drivers smoothness
    b) Good technique for a first-timer
    c) We have a lot of new owners that are very young (read teenagers). These owners would stand to benefit AND LEARN by watching a video where technique is demonstrated at a lower speed versus someone in pursuit of the fastest lap time.

I hope that answers your question :)

@Aurelien – I will take a look at the video and post it at some point in the future. Thanks for sharing that link

I like the little slip that occurs at about 8:47 and the quick countersteer input to straighten it out, brings back the memories haha.
