Honda S2000: One of the Best Exhaust Notes

When asked to describe the exhaust note on the S2000, some if not most of us would display a perplexed look or sarcastically say, “what exhaust note?”. Many of our members feel that the S2000 sounds better and truer to its nature if equipped with an after-market exhaust system from say ASM or Invidia or Mugen or any other tuning shop for that matter.

It may come as a surprise to several of us, that a publication, no less than Car and Driver has adjudged the S2000 as having one of the best exhaust notes. In my opinion, the S2000 engine is a screamer with a very unique and aggressive tone.

However that engine tone is somewhat muffled by the exhaust that is understandably engineered to comply with noise and emission requirements. Adding an intake and an after-market exhaust would really do a lot more justice to the awesome F series engine. It is par for the course for several of us.

But our opinions aside, Car and Driver has still adjudged it as worthy of their Top Five, even calling the S2000 “the coke-snorting four cylinder”. What do you think about it? Credit must go to Honda though for making it to a list that contains two custom-tuned cars, the Ferrari F430 and the Mercedes C63 AMG. Click through to see the full list from Car and Driver and judge for yourself.

That’s just simply amazing. I mean look at what other cars the s2k makes the list with. It’s by far the cheapest car there and it still beat out other cars 4-5-10 times its price…fantastic! gj Honda =)

I actually agree with this article. I heard my buddies stock exhaust revving high, I thought it sounded pretty great stock. Even better AEM =)

I added an K&N intake after hearing it on someone else’s car. Gives a much more throaty sound for minimal time/money invested, especially if you get on it a little. Also seems to run quieter then with normal air box when tooling around town. But sounds good no matter which way you slice it.

That is great that Car & Driver thinks it is one of the best
sounding exhaust notes but without an aftermarket exhaust, the
car just does not sound the way it should! It deserves to have
a deeper, more attention getting tone. I put the Invidia Q300
dual catback exhaust on my S and it sounds great!

All of this is my humble opinion, of course.

Honda got it right from the beginning! I like the balance of sound and performance of the stock exhaust. All the others are merely a waste of money and are only good for ego strokes.

You may be correct on the oem exhaust note, but I won’t get over how heavy that hunk of metal is. (ap2 exhaust)

Add a high-flow catylitic convertor to the stock exhaust, plus an AEM intake unit and the smiles just keep coming.

I hear not many hp gains on the exhaust topic, but I installed a BERK high flow cat , and the FIPK k&n intake, actually the intake is dyno proven almost 10hp to the wheels, and u can def notice the throttle response and makes the vtec scream @ 6k .Hopefully after my DC sports ss header with the high flow cat and then throw a T1R cat back ,or invidia or skunk2 , lol obviously having problems deciding the exhaust I want , then maybe I’ll get some HP out of then a FULL exhaust ..
