Retrofitting Heated Seats in a S2000 in an Afternoon

Driving the Honda S2000 with the top down is a joy, unless you live somewhere cold, in which case, you probably only drive it on nice days, and not at night. You can extend your topless fun by retrofitting heated seats in just a few hours.

1. Remove Seats From Car

After purchasing a seat heater kit, it's time to put them to good use. First, remove the seat, then you'll take the seat cover to fit the heated pads under the upholstery. The S2000's seats are held in place by two 14mm bolts in the rear, and two 12mm bolts in the front. Disconnect the seat belt clip from under the seat, then remove the rings that connect the seat cover to the seat pan using hog ring pliers or a similar tool.

2. Separate Seat and Back

With the seat out of your S2K, locate the 12mm hinge bolts on the sides of the seat that holds the base and the back together. Once the two halves are apart, pull the bottom seat cover two-thirds of the way off to expose the foam under it.

3. Cut a Hole

Cut a hole into the seat foam big enough to run the wires for the seat heater you've purchased. Feed the wire through and out of the large hole already in the seat pan. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with your seat heater pad so you position it properly. Remember you are going to be sitting on this, so make the wires and smooth as possible.

4. Remove Seat Back Pad

You have the option of skipping this, and just adding a heater to the bottom half of the seat, or putting heating pads in both halves. Turning your attention to the back of the seat, unclip the hook that runs at the base of the back. You can do this using a flathead screwdriver. Once you unhook the clip, the seat pad should hinge out, but keep an eye out for hog rings that need removing as you're pulling the pad off. Install the seat heater in the back like you did in the bottom part of the seat, then run the wires down the back.

5. Install Switch

Drill a hole for the seat heating switch, then clip it in place using the clips that will come with it. You can use a small bit in the drill, then go bigger until it is just big enough for a snug fit. Drill the hole on the center console's side, this way you can get your power from the outlet inside the center console.

6. Wire the Heater

Remove the panel behind the driver's seat, which is only held in place by two hooks. Disconnect the power and ground wires from the outlet located behind the panel you've removed. The ground is the black wire and the power is either white or red. Splice the ground and power wires using an electric plastic connector to connect them with your seat heating wires.

7. Reinstall Everything

Make sure to tuck the wires neatly behind the panel, then reinstall the panel back in place. Put the seat back together, then reinstall it into your S2000 and connect the wires coming out from behind the seat to the wires coming out from the seat. Finally, take your S2K for a ride in the cool night air and enjoy your handy work.
