What Pistons Are Used In Your Monotube Shocks (esp. Penske, Bilstein)
There are many different piston designs used in monotube shocks...and nearly all the shocks being used in coilovers are monotubes.
Can you indicate which piston you have and why it was chosen.

S2000 Penske 8300s: VDP valved by Guy Ankeny @ A.R.E
My dampers came with VDPs (as did my Elise Penskes, weird). Guy and I talked about swapping them for high-flow linear pistons. He tried a couple of shim setups and found a combination that was to his liking utilizing the VDPs. So, we kept the VDPs.
If I had my choice, I would use a piston with high-flow capability. That is important when trying to maximize the digressive nature of the compression curve. You can generate a digressive characteristic with linear or digressive pistons.

That is interesting. Penske told me they used the high flow linear as their default for cars that are used on the street. The VDPs look similar at lower piston speeds, but go progressive at higher speeds. Was Guy able to tune down the progressive area?

Yes, for the most part. They're not as digressive as they could be, but they are acceptable. It's not street driven, so comfort is a lower priority.
