I don't wanna state the bleedin' o'vious, but you HAVE swapped the bulbs over first before trying anything else, haven't you?
Otherwise you might as well start by checking the Belleville washers for excessive crank float and work outwards from there.

Thought that if it was the bulb it wouldn't work at all.

They die just like any other fluorescent tube; flicker, flicker flicker, flam. Or with a pow!
Some gradually do deep purple/ultra-violet where they're no use.
Always check the bleedin' o'vious first.

It flickers now and then, then goes out. When I turn them off then back on comes back on fine. Just going off what people have told me on here plus reading other threads.
