Starting rasp
When starting my 2003 Suzuka when cold, there is a loud and disturbing grind/rasp right after the engine fires. Sounds like the starter, but I am concerned with timing chain tensioner as well. Once warmed up the rasp on start is very little and the engine sounds fine. Any advice would be appreciated! This car has 89000 on the clock.

TCT ever replaced? Bad tensioner, though, rattles all the time. Changing this takes 10 minutes and I consider it good preventive maintenance. I'm using Billman's version.
The sound continues until the engine is warm? That pretty much excluded the starter.
I doubt the Suzuka plant has anything to do with this after 89K miles.

If it sounds like a higher pitched grind noise just after starting the car when cold, it's just the starter. It's pretty common. The bendix is staying engaged for slightly longer than it needs to be. You can replace it, or get one that's been rebuilt but honestly, mine's been doing it for years. It only does it when it's cold outside. The starter will continue to work and I think the general consensus is that it will eventually wear out, but won't harm the flywheel, so just let it grind on and don't worry about it.

Thanks guys. The sound is only on start, so I am agreeing with Kenta. I was told years ago that this was common with S2000, but recently it is sounding a bit worse. I do want to replace the tensioner as well as preventative maintenance. It is just nice to have somebody else chime in, thanks to you both!

I think I'm experiencing this as well. Started a few months ago and the mechanic couldn't diagnosis it. I will let it grind out to failure.
Thanks Kenta

Just an update - a new battery is also something I needed. My old, tired battery created much longer and frequent bendix squeal as it struggled to turn over the engine. Dropped in a new battery and much less bendix squeal with a faster firing.
