Default DIY Timing Chain Tensioner.. Anyone Done It?

Hi All,

Im starting to hear a faint rattle from the engine and it is definitely the timing chain tensioner (also known as the cam chain tensioner). Has anyone done this to their car yet and would any of you be willing to lend a hand in sand blasting the worm gear?

Thanks!

^I've heard that sandblasting doesn't always work. My friend tried this method last July, so far it's holding up.

Hmmm. That seems like a better long-term solution. I'd be willing to spend $100 more than the OEM part to never have to mess with it again. Thanks for the info!!

Forget this nonsense and get Billman's Gen-X TCT. 10mm ratchet wrench, Allen wrench, needle nose pliers and a paper towel and the swap can be done in a dress shirt and nice slacks in 5 minutes. Yeah I was impatient. And impressed.

Just ordered the ballade unit. I contacted Billman but I was not keen on the higher upfront costs and having to return my unit (want to keep for backup). Hopefully I'll get it next week, install and report on the fix. Both have lifetime guarantees so I think it all depends on if you don't mind the extra $125 deposit Billman charges. I understand why he does it, but if another company can produce the same result (at nearly the same price) without the deposit, and I get to keep my original unit, and I dont have to ship back to the seller... The Ballade makes more sense from that standpoint. Anyway... thanks for the help guys!!!

The classic argument. Billmans vs Ballade? I'd personally go with Billmans. Do it once correct for lifetime. Shit happens then Billman will send you another one. No questions asked. I like Billmans approach to the worm gear modification. Who other than Billmans can we trust since he is the walking encyclopedia of our cars?!
