I just bought my first S (woohoo!) and I was able to negotiate the price to include fixing two tears in soft top as part of the final sale. Today I got a call and the salesman told me that he found out that the fix for the tears would cost them about $500. He said that if I chose to do so, the soft top could instead be replaced for $1800 of which they were willing to pitch in $900. I asked if it is an OEM replacement top, which he couldn't answer for sure but he guessed it was OEM. I'm very skeptical since I thought an OEM top plus labor would cost way more than that. What are your thoughts on what I should go for?

Hmm, that's a tough question. $1800 is a lllott for an S2000 replacement soft top imo (sounds like dealership pricing)!
I think the Robbins tops are like $600 at most brand new with the glass window, so $900 installed would be a lot more reasonable (and fortunately you have negotiated). If they can guarantee/warranty your replacement soft top and their installation job for years to come (life maybe?!), I'd say have them install a new soft top for you for the $900! The fact that they'd otherwise have charged $500 just to patch up the tears seems a bit ridiculous, and I don't think it would be the same at all as a new soft top.

agreed. confirm the brand of top, warranty and then if its under a grand do it.

new top is worth it.

I'm also very skeptical about his quoted $500 fix for the tears. What I'm concerned about is if he what he's really trying to do is get me to put more money in, in order reduce his cost of repairs. As a car salesman, offering to put in another $400 without me ever pushing for it sounds fishy. $900 extra is a good price to replace a top, but I'd rather put in more to get it done right and with a good replacement top. I'm waiting for him to get back to me on who exactly is doing the job.

Ask for $900 back from the dealer and go get it done yourself.
