I ask as i have purchased a rear end damaged red 1999. All of the VIN plates were removed and copart have the vin as AP11002145 which is what is stamped on the bulkhead. With the registration number I have found VIN number GHMAP1F20C1002170. The sunvisors have japanese warning stickers on them so am I right to assume this is a Japanese imported car?
The number prefixed 'AP1' is the VIN, the number prefixed 'F20C' is the engine number. Hope this helps.

My JDM engine number was F20C, whereas the UKDM engine was F20C2. If I remember correctly. The engine number may help.

The car also has the optional 6 spoke BBS forged alloys on it also.

Also you can check if the rear left lower arm has a sensor which looks likes a link and is for adjusting the heigh of the headlights. Something that jdm cars dont have as is not a regulation in japan. (Not sure though if the early eu versions had it)
If its a 1999 model the chassi number starts with GH-AP1 100xxxx (on the plate). On the bulkhead, as you stated, it would be just the AP1xxxx part
