I've tried a million of them. I've got a Nexus 6, so even bigger than your 5X (but I've got a 6P coming today).

My choice was the itottie brand. It's really solid, not expensive, the phone just pops in and out with a push (the way it grabs it is super cool).

And best is you can mount it in the corner of the windshield by your right hand, where not only is it not in your line of site, but you can touch the screen with your fingers without taking your hands off the wheel.

Get this one if the 5X will fit, it's a little more solid and less vibration than the second.

Buy this if you need it slightly bigger.

Way cheaper and better than the modify way. You can touch it without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes much off the road. And it doesn't block your heater vent.
The OP said he didn't want a windscreen mount.

He wasn't 100% on that. And, since it's so superior to any other way with these mounts, I thought I'd mention it.

More will be revealed as the project develops, but it is definitely a phone holder

I have the modifry bracket with a tilt/swivel phone holder from ProClip and that has got to be the ultimate combo.
Works fantastic

I'm quite happy with the modifry holder.

This might not be the best phone holder for s2k, but I have finally launched this on Kickstarter

I'm sure you'll find other applications fascinating!!

Cheers,
